YOUR OPINION: Guilt by family association

Dear Editor,

Chairman of the House Oversight Committee James Comer is determined to inflict political damage on President Biden with unfounded allegations, lies and innuendos. His effort has tried to assert the “Biden family” has all profited from illegal activities through Hunter Biden and his international relationships with Ukraine and China.

President Biden has been accused of getting Viktor Shokin, a former Ukrainian prosecutor, fired because he was investigating Burisma — a company on whose board Hunter Biden served. The alleged investigation by Shokin did not take place. Vice President Biden, the International Monetary Fund, European Union and anti-corruption all wanted Shokin fired because he was incompetent and corrupt.

Last week, the oversight committee heard Devon Archer, former business partner of Hunter Biden, who they hoped would have damaging information against the Bidens. He testified Hunter and his father talked frequently on the speaker phone while at business meetings. They never talked business. His conclusion was that Hunter was trying to impress other members with the Biden “brand.” It was an illusion to access rather than actual access. Joe Biden never took any actions to benefit Burisma according to Archer who testified under the penalty of perjury.

Archer also said he disagreed with the allegation that a $5 million bribe was paid to Joe Biden, saying Zlochevesky (founder of Burisma) was likely bragging when he made this claim. Even though this claim is in an FBI document, the FBI stated it can’t be sure about the veracity of the claim. The source of this allegation supposedly had audio recordings, but none have emerged. There is no proof Shokin was uncovering a bribery scheme that involved the Bidens even as Fox has mentioned “bribe” or “bribery” over 1,000 times and thus has sustained the lie to its followers. Hunter Biden’s prosecutor is a Trump appointee who has been free to investigate without interference.

Hunter Biden profited from his Biden brand as Donald Trump’s children and relatives profited from his brand. Jared Kushner received $2 billion from the Saudis. Ivanka made 13 million from her stake in Trump’s Washington, D.C., hotel while serving in the Trump administration. Trump refused to make his tax returns public or put his businesses in a blind trust while he made $2.4 billion from them while serving as president, according to Forbes. President Biden makes his tax returns public every year.
