Panos Theodorou, 29, died during a labour accident while operating a forklift vehicle outside his family’s business in the Ayios Silas area of Limassol on Thursday.

According to philenews, the accident occurred around 11 a.m. The victim’s brother discovered the 29-year-old after the tragic incident and immediately attempted to extricate him from the forklift machine with the help of another vehicle.

In a statement from the scene of the incident, Emilios Kafas, Deputy Head of the Limassol Traffic Department, reported, “Unfortunately, today we had another fatal traffic accident that occurred in the industrial area of Ayios Silas, in the Limassol province, where a 29-year-old fellow citizen lost his life.”

According to Kafas, the 29-year-old was operating a forklift vehicle on a public road and, at some point, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer abruptly to the right. As a result, the forklift tilted to the left, and with the vehicle’s call, the driver lost his balance and fell, hitting the asphalt. Subsequently, the victim was crushed by the vehicle.

Theodorou was extricated from the scene by his brother and with the assistance of the Fire Department. He was then transported by ambulance to the Limassol General Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

“The circumstances under which the accident occurred are being investigated by the Limassol Traffic Department in collaboration with the Polemidia Police Station and the Labour Inspection Department to clarify the exact circumstances that led to this event,” Kafas stated.

When asked if there were any indications of what the 29-year-old was attempting to do, he noted, “At this time, there is no indication. You understand that all the employees are at Limassol Hospital.”

He stressed that a forklift vehicle is not registered, and under normal circumstances, it should only be used within the factory premises for work purposes and not for public road use. Regarding the investigations, he mentioned that security cameras in the vicinity would be examined, along with testimonies gathered.

The news of the 29-year-old’s death has brought sorrow to his relatives, friends, and the football community in Cyprus, as he had been a former football player and was currently serving as a referee.

The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and a number of football teams have issued announcements expressing their condolences to Theodorou’s family.
