Group H: South Korea (2-1) Portugal
- South Korea advanced to the round of 16, after beating Portugal 2-1 with a stoppage-time strike from Hwang Hee-chan.
- South Korea, who began the day in third place in the group, ensured a second-place finish.
- Despite the unexpected defeat, Portugal, which had already qualified for the knockout stages, still won the top spot in the group.
- They will now face the runners-up in Group G, which contains Brazil, Switzerland, Cameroon and Serbia.
- With qualification assured, Portugal has rested several key players, with Rúben Dias, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva all starting on the bench.
Group H: Uruguay (2-0) Ghana
- Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 but it wasn’t enough to allow the team to go through, as they needed 3 goals to surpass South Korea in goal difference.
- Ghana needed to win — and hope South Korea fails to beat Portugal — to qualify, but that didn’t happen.
- Uruguay’s Luis Suarez cried as his team was knocked out of the World Cup, while the country’s players were angry at the referee as they didn’t get a penalty they thought they deserved.
Group G: Switzerland 3-2 Serbia
-
Switzerland advanced to the last 16 for the third tournament in a row after a 3-2 win over Serbia.
-
Switzerland needed a win to guarantee itself a place in the knockout round after beating Cameroon and losing to Brazil in its opening two games.
-
The team took an early lead, and although Serbia turned it around in the second half of the match, it wasn’t enough to defeat the Swiss.
-
There were some tensions towards the end of the match as Swiss player Granit Xhaka — whose family are Albanian — was pushed by Serbia’s Nikola Milenkovic. Both players got a yellow card as a result of the incident.
-
Serbia is now out of the World Cup, while
Switzerland will face Portugal on Tuesday at Lusail Stadium.
Group G: Cameroon 1-0 Brazil
-
Cameroon was eliminated by the World Cup, but not without first enjoying a thrilling 1-0 victory over Brazil with Vincent Aboubakar’s goal two minutes into stoppage time.
-
Aboubakar celebrated the goal by taking his shirt off, which brought him a second yellow card from the referee.
-
Brazil had already reached the knockout stage after victories over Serbia and Switzerland earlier this week, and is now scheduled to face South Korea in the round of 16.
-
The South American team finished with six points, the same as Switzerland — but Brazil had a better goal difference.
