Wizz Air expands operations at Rome Fiumicino

Wizz Air is adding new routes from Rome Fiumicino after basing an eleventh aircraft at the Italian airport.

The Hungary-based budget carrier has already launched new routes to Luxembourg and Kuwait, which will be followed in early September by services to Memmingen in Germany and the Portuguese island of Madeira.

Wizz said the addition of a new Airbus A321neo at Fiumicino would further reduce the airline’s carbon emissions per passenger kilometre.

The airline is also using a “fully electric” turnaround process at the Rome airport, including electric baggage tractors and belt loaders, passenger steps, ground power unit and pushback equipment.

Wizz said this move cuts carbon emissions from ground-handling processes by 85 per cent per aircraft compared with diesel-power equipment.

Yvonne Moynihan, corporate and ESG officer at Wizz Air, added: “We have made significant investment in our fleet, currently the youngest and most fuel-efficient in Europe. But our sustainability efforts do not stop here: for the longer term, we are also exploring the potential for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrogen-powered zero emission aircraft.”
