London-based travel management company Wings Global Travel has fully acquired the data technology provider behind its global service platform, from which it has created a European tech headquarters in Cyprus, the company announced.
Wings’ full acquisition of Alchimea, which provides the central database capability for its WingsOne platform, comes after several years as a majority investor in the company, and it has now renamed the firm ‘Wings Tech’.
Wings founder and CEO Tony Sofianos said it gives the TMC — which said it has clients in the banking, legal and professional services, energy and marine and mining and manufacturing sectors — “the same level of control of our technology” as it has for its 16 international hubs instead of using third parties.
The Wings Tech operations will bear responsibility for the TMC’s digital infrastructure moving forward.
Wings global CIO Frank Palapies added the Cyprus base for the technology operations, moving there from the previous location in South Africa, was “an attractive location for businesses” in part because “the Cyprus government is investing heavily in the technology sector”.
Wings, which ranked among BTN Europe’s Leading TMCs 2022, said the technology team in Cyprus should reach a total of 30 employees by the end of 2023.
