Charlotte Backus waited months for the chance to send her kitchen trash through the mail, so that a company in another state could turn it into chicken feed.
A new crop of companies is betting she isn’t the only consumer willing to pay for the privilege of recycling banana peels, fish bones and coffee grounds. Startups, bolstered by revved-up government policies to cut down on food waste in landfills, are selling kitchen devices that turn food scraps into a substance that they say can be reused on farms or in gardens.
