Experts have stated that cloud computing is essential for businesses to thrive and provide a robust foundation for digital acceleration needs and initiatives.

Speaking at a tech conference, tagged: Exploring innovative possibilities with OpenAI and Azure Technologies in Africa,” held in Yaba College of Technology, Microsoft community lead, Nigeria, Rowland Joseph, said given that technology is the major driving force for economic growth, it was time the youths and Nigerians key into its benefits.

Lagos State Former commissioner of Science and Technology, Hakeem Popoola, noted that it was exciting to see that Nigerians are adopting technology and leveraging its power to move the economy forward.

Popoola, who noted that the cost of building infrastructure is expensive, stated that leveraging the power of cloud, would enable one to use one’s phone or computer to start a business instead of building a data centre.

He said: “If you look at the progress we have made in Africa, especially among the startups, because of cloud computing, they’re able to do most of their operations and deployment in the cloud environment. All they have to do is to leverage the power of the cloud to deploy their applications. And that’s a big plus and the trend will continue. Cloud is growing rapidly in Africa.

“Look at the number of data centers we have in Nigeria, it’s increasing, AWS has a local presence in Nigeria, and they have a huge data center in South Africa. Microsoft also has big data centers in South Africa. So also, Google; Google has a huge cable in Nigeria, which is to provide a tremendous amount of data coming into the country and out. We are seeing this growth in technology. And the trend is going to continue. I’m very glad that the students at Yaba College of Technology are excited about technology.”
