When will all new cars in the UK be electric? Dates for every brand from Alfa Romeo to Volvo

[ad_1]

The Government’s decision to delay its ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035 has put a cat amongst the pigeons in terms of manufacturer plans to fill their showrooms exclusively with electric vehicles.

Rishi Sunak announced in August 2023 that the deadline would be pushed back due to high EV prices at a time when families are already struggling through a cost-of-living crisis.

The statement comes as many car firms had already committed to ditching the internal combustion engine, with some in advanced planning to fill showrooms with EVs much earlier than the new date set out by the PM.

In this guide we take a look at 44 major car firms and what they have said about their electrification own plans, including when they intend to stop selling motors with petrol and diesel engines once and for all.

ALFA ROMEO

From 2025, Alfa Romeo says it plans to only launch pure-electric models, and by 2027 its entire line-up in Europe is expected to be EVs – some three years earlier than sister brands under the Stellantis group banner.

It only has one ‘electrified’ car on sale at the moment – the plug-in hybrid Tonale.

The first fully electric Alfa is expected to be unveiled in 2024 and likely called ‘Brennero’.

ASTON MARTIN

Aston Martin’s first EV will arrive in 2025 and this is what its silhouette will look like, according to the British brand. Its broader aim is to fully electrify its ‘core range’ of cars by 2030

James Bond could soon be at the wheel of an electric car, given Aston Martin’s intention to electrify its business.

In 2023, bosses said the brand will reveal its first all-electric car in 2025 (very early design sketch pictured above) and a year later its entire range of vehicles will be available with an ‘electrified’ powertrain option – in many cases, likely plug-in hybrids. But in the statement issued, it said its ‘core range’ will be pure-electric by 2030.

This will be aided by a partnership with EV-maker Lucid, giving the iconic British marque access to the American firm’s electric motors and transmission in a deal reportedly worth £182million.

In October 2023, it was also confirmed that the company will receive £9million in UK Government funding to accelerate its electrification programme.

AUDI

When is it going fully electric in the UK? 2033

Audi already has a range of EVs on sale, though all of them are far pricier than their combustion-engine counterparts. By 2025, the car maker’s CEO says it will have 20 different battery models

Audi announced that from 2026 it will only launch new vehicles that are electric. And from 2033, it has suggested it will cease production of internal combustion engines entirely.

However, during a statement in 2021 during a Berlin climate conference, CEO Markus Duesmann said the company’s electrification strategy will be steered by consumer demand and not government bans on the sale of petrol and diesel models.

‘Through our innovative strength, we offer individuals sustainable and carbon-neutral mobility options. I don’t believe in the success of bans. I believe in the success of technology and innovation,’ he told the conference.

He went on: ‘The exact timing of the combustion engine’s discontinuation at Audi will ultimately be decided by customers and legislation. The company expects to see continued demand in China beyond 2033, which is why there could be a supply of vehicles there with combustion engines manufactured locally.’

By 2025, Audi aims to have more than 20 EVs in its lineup. ‘With this roadmap, we are creating the clarity necessary to make a decisive and powerful transition to the electric age. We’re sending the signal that Audi is ready,’ Mr Duesmann said.

BENTLEY

When is it going fully electric in the UK? 2030

Bentley to be electric in 2030: The iconic British brand will ditch petrol engines for good from 2026 and sell only fully-electric models by the end of the decade

Bentley was one of the first brands to pin its colours to the battery mast, announcing it will be a fully-fledged electric car maker by 2030. Its first all-electric model is due in 2025, though it has been selling a hybrid variant of the Bentayga SUV since 2021.

It’s a huge shift for the brand, which will end its 107-year history of selling cars with petrol engines from 2026 as the line-up will be either hybrid of pure EV.

The brand has also signalled its keen interest longer term in hydrogen-powered electric fuel cells.

Adrian Hallmark, Bentley’s chairman and chief executive, said it was time for ‘profound change’ for the motor maker. ‘We are on a mission. We need to change everything. But our cars in the future will look as inspirational and glorious as they do today,’ he added.

The Bavarian car firm is among a number of the German car makers that is yet to pin an exact date for when it will stop selling petrol and diesel cars to the European public.

In 2020, CEO Oliver Zipse said internal combustion engine development will continue while demand for new petrol and diesel cars remains ‘robust’ in the coming years, though wanted the company to deliver one EV in each major vehicle segment by 2023.

From 2025 onwards, the BMW Group plans to increase its delivery share of all-electric vehicles to 50 per cent. And by 2030, it intends to have sold 10 million fully electric models, which will represent at least half of global deliveries.

CITROEN

This is the Citroen e-C3 – the French firm’s electric supermini due to hit UK showrooms in 2024. A year later, the marque could launch a smaller battery version that could become one of the most affordable EVs in Britain

Unlike other Stellantis-owned sister brands, French car maker Citroen has not rubberstamped its date to stop offering new petrol and diesel models in Europe.

However, it has said it will only launch fully electric models from 2026 onwards, which will see the availability of combustion-engine vehicles in showrooms dwindle towards the end of the decade.

It currently offers a range of electric cars in its global model line-up – the e-C4, e-C4 X, e-Spacetourer, e-Berlingo and the dinky Ami quadricycle, which – starting from under £8,000 – is the UK’s cheapest EV, though with a top speed of 28mph and range of 46 miles qualifies as a quadricycle. In 2024, it will also sell the e-C3, which could cost as little as £17,000 in the future.

CUPRA

When is it going fully electric in the UK? UNCONFIRMED

Cupra’s Born is its first fully-electric model ahead of it becoming an EV-only brand from 2023. Look familiar? It should, as it’s a rebranded VW ID.3 packing a bit of extra handling performance

Cupra – the Spanish sporty spin-off brand of Seat – has one zero-emission vehicle on sale at the moment – the Born hatchback, which is essentially a re-badged Volkswagen ID.3.

Like its Volkswagen parent group, it hasn’t yet set a hard and fast deadline for ditching petrol and diesel cars.

However, in 2021, CEO Wayne Griffiths said the company has ‘the ambition to become a fully electric brand by 2030’.

DACIA

When is it going fully electric in the UK? UNCONFIRMED

Dacia will sell its first EV, the Spring (pictured), in the UK from 2024. It will have a range of up to 143 miles on a full charge

Being a manufacturer that specialises in affordable models puts Dacia in a difficult position when it comes to switching to an EV line-up, given that battery cars tend to have hefty price tags, at least for the time being.

However, it will sell its first full EV – the Spring – in the UK from 2024, with the jacked-up supermini likely to cost under £20,000.

As for wider plans to go electric, Dacia has kept its cards close to its chest… for now.

It’s parent company, Renault, which also provides its engines, will become a fully-electric brand from 2030. Though Luca de Meo, boss of the Renault Group, said Dacia’s transition will come later and ‘at the last possible moment’.

DS says it will be an all-electric car brand by 2024. It currently sells just one EV – the DS3 Crossback E-Tense (pictured)

The DS3 E-Tense is the French luxury marque’s first – and currently only – electric car. But not for long. DS Automobile bosses confirmed it will be a fully-electric brand across the globe from 2024.

Béatrice Foucher, CEO at DS Automobiles, in 2021 said: ‘The car industry is experiencing a change whose breadth and speed are unprecedented. As a pioneer, DS Automobiles has anticipated this move, with electrification at the centre of its strategy.

‘The next developments in legislation and the EV ecosystem provide opportunities that we want to offer to our customers who already like our electrified range. I took the decision to speed up the development to create a new 100 per cent electric art of travel, desirable in terms of enjoyment and remarkable in terms of quality and performance; a new art of travel, steadfastly high tech and still just as refined.

‘It is a daring plan that will take shape from 2024.’

FERRARI

Ferrari currently has a couple of plug-in hybrid supercars – including the SF90 Stradale pictured – but in 2025 will launch its first full EV. However, it has yet to confirm when it intends to go fully electric as a marque

Ferrari is due to unveil its first zero-emission car in 2025 and by 2030 around 80 per cent of all Ferrari sales will be either hybrid or electric. However, despite having an electrification strategy, this does not include a date for when it will cull the internal combustion engine.

‘Everything we do will always focus on being distinctively Ferrari,’ chairman John Elkann said as the company unveiled its new business plan. Electrification ‘will allow us to make even more unique cars,’ he added.

FIAT

When is it going fully electric in the UK? 2030

Fiat's iconic 500 has already made the switch to EV power. Its new 600 will be a larger EV before all models sold in Europe will have a battery instead of a combustion engine

Fiat’s iconic 500 has already made the switch to EV power. Its new 600 will be a larger EV before all models sold in Europe will have a battery instead of a combustion engine

Italian car maker Fiat will say ‘arrivederci’ to petrol and diesel engines by 2030, bosses at the manufacturer confirmed in 2021. The brand will begin to phase out all combustion-engined models from its global line-up from 2025 – and by the end of the decade will no longer sell passenger cars with a petrol or diesel powerplant under the bonnet.

‘Between 2025 and 2030, our product line-up will gradually become electric only. This will be a radical change for Fiat,’ explained Fiat boss Olivier François while outlining the brand’s sustainability vision.

Fiat’s biggest seller is without doubt the 500, which has already gone electric. The city car has been on sale in the UK since the beginning of 2021 and offers a range of up to 199 miles. It has recently announced the arrival of a bigger 600 EV and could also bring the Topolino quadricycle (the sister model to the Citroen Ami) to the UK market.

FORD

‘A trailblazer for a new breed of exciting electric vehicles’: This is the Ford Explorer electric SUV. It will go on sale from 2024 and offer a range of more than 300 miles from a single charge. Ford will sell only electric cars from 2030 in Europe

Ford, one of the UK’s most popular car brand, announced in February 2021 that its entire passenger vehicle line-up in Europe will be electric or plug-in hybrid by mid-2026 – and in 2030 will be all-electric only.

Its first electric-only car is the impressive Mustang Mach-E that will be joined shortly by the new Explorer SUV. And Ford has already began sales of electric versions of its hugely popular Transit vans.

The manufacturer has also confirmed that it will utilise a strategic alliance formed with Volkswagen AG in 2019 in the early phase of its all-electric onslaught. Ford will use its German partner’s MEB electric vehicle platform to build more affordable models at its Cologne factory.

Genesis – the luxury division of Korean brand Hyundai – is the new kid on the block and has only recently broken into Europe with a range of hybrid and electric cars.

Bosses said it will bring six new EVs to market by the end of the decade as part of its transition away from the combustion engine.

From 2025, it will only be releasing models powered entirely by batteries, and some five years later it will only sell EVs in Europe, it has said.

HONDA

When is it going fully electric in the UK? 2040

Honda will continue production of combustion engine cars until 2040, though says around 80% of sales in Europe by 2035 will be electric or hydrogen fuel cell models. It will launch 30 new EVs by 2030, with the e:Ny1 (pictured) landing in 2024

Despite being one of the pioneering brands of the early hybrid generation, Honda has shared very little detail about its full electrification strategy. In fact, most of its announcements today are only for its plans for the Chinese EV market.

That said, the Japanese firm has promised 30 new EVs by 2030, including the Honda-e that’s been on sale since 2020 and the 2024 e:Ny1, which has a range of 256 miles. It has also signed deals with General Motors and Sony as part of joint ventures for EV development.

Bosses expect 40 per cent of sales in Europe to be either electric or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, rising to 80 per cent by the time the UK bans the availability of new petrol and diesel cars in 2035. It says it will not likely phase out the internal combustion engine globally until 2040.

HYUNDAI

The Korean car firm is already one of the major players towards the more affordable end of the EV market – and it has big plans for the future – including setting its sights on being the world’s third largest EV maker by 2025.

During the 2022 Munich motor show, Hyundai bosses confirmed the brand will stop selling petrol and diesel vehicles in Europe from 2035 as part of an ambitious goal to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2045.

Part of this strategy will be increasing annual global EV sales to 1.87million by 2030 in an effort to take hold of seven per cent of the total market. Some 11 new models have been promised before end of the decade.

In 2022, it revealed further details of its electrification plans, which includes the consideration for a new dedicated EV production facility as well as the development of next-generation batteries.

Inoes Automotive has confirmed it will introduce its first EV in 2026, which could see future plans for hydrogen fuel cell development shelved

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Automotive car company in April 2023 confirmed plans to add an electric 4X4 to its model line-up from 2026, as it accelerates its zero-emission intentions.

Expected to be smaller than its debut model – the Grenadier –  the new model is already under development in Austria and will use batteries rather than hydrogen power, despite the brand’s partnership with Korean car firm Hyundai to trial fuel-cell technology for passenger vehicles.

Despite being laden with heavy batteries, Ratcliffe’s car company promises it will ‘deliver world-class off-road capability, without compromising on-road comfort or performance’, but hasn’t outlined when it will make only EV models.

JAGUAR

Jaguar will become an ‘all-electric luxury brand’ in 2025 – meaning it has its work cut out considering it currently sells only one EV

Jaguar was the first premium car maker to put it to Tesla in 2018 with the launch of the I-Pace SUV. Some five years later, it remains its only EV on sale. However, that will all change in the next two years.

In February 2021, bosses outlined Jaguar’s intention to be an ‘all-electric luxury brand’ from 2025. The move will see Jaguar completely axe the petrol engines that made its name within the next three years.

The first next-generation EV will be shown next year and is confirmed as a £100,000 four-door grand tourer with the ‘wow factor’.

JLR’s chief executive, Adrian Mardell, said about Jaguar’s switch to being EV-only: ‘This is also about the renaissance of Jaguar. It’s personal. It’s unfinished business. Jaguar is going to be reborn. Our focus is now on delivery and execution.’

JEEP

The Avenger is the first all-electric Jeep to go on sale, but more are coming by 2025. The brand intends for 100% of its sales in Europe to be electric from 2030

Jeep might be famed for its production of heavy-duty 4X4s for the Second World War, but the brand has already taken the first turn on its route to electrification with the launch of its Avenger SUV in 2023.

And this compact EV will soon be joined by a host of battery-powered siblings, with the company confirming four new electric cars by 2025.

By 2030, bosses say 100 per cent of sales in Europe will be electric. In its home nation, the US, around 50 per cent of sales by the end of the decade will be EVs.

KIA

Kia says it will transition to a zero-emission range of vehicles by 2035. Pictured is its seven-seat EV9 electric family car with a range of 337 miles that arrives in 2024

Like sister brand Hyundai, Kia has big expectations to takeover a substantial chunk of the passenger vehicle market in the next decade.

Globally, it aims to leapfrog other manufacturers by launching 15 EVs by 2027, which includes the EV9 seven-seat SUV. These will help raise its proportion of electrified car sales to 55 per cent annually by 2030, which would see it shifting around 2.38 million units per year.

And the Korean firm promises it will cease selling combustion-engine cars in Europe by 2035 (worldwide by 2040) as part of a wider effort to become fully carbon neutral by 2045.

LAMBORGHINI

This is the Lanzador concept – the preview of Lamborghini’s first electric car due in 2028. The Italian firm has promises to ‘electrify’ its entire model range by 2024, though won’t put  date on when it ditches the combustion engine entirely

Supercar maker Lamborghini has outlined how it will transition to a greener future as part of a €1.9billion (£1.6bn) ‘Direzione Cor Tauri’ decarbonisation roadmap. This includes ‘electrifying’ its model line up with at least a hybrid powertrain for all of its existing range by the end of 2024 – and the arrival of its first full EV in 2028.

The jacked-up Lanzador was unveiled in concept form at 2023 Monterey Car Week in California with the Ultra GT promised to ‘deliver extraordinary performance’ and to be ‘at the forefront of its segment’.

There is still no word on the date for when the brand intends to go totally electric.

LAND ROVER

The first electric Land Rover will be the all-new Range Rover, with a battery-only version promised for 2024

The first electric Land Rover will be the all-new Range Rover, with a battery-only version promised for 2024

While Land Rover’s sister brand, Jaguar, has bold plans to go fully electric by 2025, the 4X4 firm won’t be following suit.

Its first full-EV model will be the latest Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, both of which have been promised for 2024. They will be followed by three other pure-electric variants over the next five years and every car in its range will have an electric option by 2030. Though when it stops selling combustion engine 4X4s remains a mystery.

Land Rover has a job on its hands moving away from the diesel power that’s underpinned its success for years, though its parent company Tata confirmed in 2023 that it will help provide powertrain solutions by building its first battery ‘gigafactory’ outside of India in Somerset with an investment of £4billion – creating up to 4,000 jobs in the region.

Lexus already has the RZ and UX300e (pictured) EVs on the market, but by 2030 it will sell only battery cars in Europe, North America and China

Lexus – the premium arm of Toyota – has plenty of experience with hybrids, but not so much with pure electric cars, with only two currently on sale, including the UX300e.

However, bosses at the end of 2021 outlined Lexus and Toyota’s plans to launch a total of 30 battery EVs by 2030.

Lexus, though, will have a tighter deadline for the end of sale of petrol cars than its sister brand, aiming to sell only 100 per cent battery electric cars in major markets by 2030 – this includes Europe, North America and China.

LOTUS

This is the all-electric Lotus Eletre SUV – the brand’s first five-door model. It’s also the initial vehicle produced at the company’s new state-of-the-art factory in Wuhan, China

Lotus – now under Chinese ownership – has already made big steps in its shift to becoming all-electric.

It began with the unveiling of the Lotus’ Evija hypercar, promising 1,973bhp, 0-to-62mph in less than three seconds and a top speed in excess of 200mph – though only 130 will be made and each will cost £2million.

Since then it has unveiled its first all-electric mainstream model – the ‘Eletre’ -which is not only its debut ‘hyper’ SUV but also its first car to be built at its state-of-the-art factory in Wuhan. This will be followed by the Emeya GT model.

When it ditches petrol and diesel engines entirely is yet to be fully disclosed.

MAZDA

The MX-30's 124-mile range won't be for everyone. However, from 2025 there will be a new dedicated EV platform for Mazda, which could see performance improved dramatically. Some of the Japanese maker's proposals for its shift to zero-emission cars sound like it could lag behind rivals

The MX-30’s 124-mile range won’t be for everyone. However, from 2025 there will be a new dedicated EV platform for Mazda, which could see performance improved dramatically. Some of the Japanese maker’s proposals for its shift to zero-emission cars sound like it could lag behind rivals

The MX-30 is Mazda’s debut electric car. It’s definitely unique, with a funky design and attention-grabbing coachdoors. But the range of 124 miles is measly compared to rivals. That said, Mazda says it is a car aimed at those living in urban areas.

More impressive EVs are due, with three all-electric cars coming by 2025. Mazda is then promising a dedicated EV platform by 2025. Then it will add multiple models to its electric portfolio in the second half of the decade.

In major markets, it’s aiming for 25 per cent of all sales being pure electric by 2030 but hasn’t said when it will shift to EV-exclusive showrooms in Europe.

MERCEDES-BENZ

When is it going fully electric in the UK? 2030

Mercedes already has an EV model in every segment it occupies. It has previously said it will sell only electric cars in nations where ‘market conditions allow’. The delay to the ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK might impact its strategy in Britain

Mercedes-Benz is one brand that has rapidly accelerated its shift to EVs in recent years with a range of – expensive – ‘EQ’ models. It already has a battery-electric car on sale in every segment and from 2025 onward it will only launch new battery-electric architecture.

Previously, CEO Ola Kallenius has said the brand will have only EVs in showrooms from 2030 where ‘market conditions allow’.

That could see the intention to end sales of petrol and diesel cars from the end of the decade pushed back to coincide with Rishi Sunak’s U-turn on outlawing sales of new ICE models from 2030.

MG MOTOR UK

When is it going fully electric in the UK? UNCONFIRMED

MG hasn't put a date on when it will go entirely electric in the UK, but from 2024 will be selling the Cyberster - a two-door battery-powered roadster that will start from around £50k

MG hasn’t put a date on when it will go entirely electric in the UK, but from 2024 will be selling the Cyberster – a two-door battery-powered roadster that will start from around £50k

The MG brand’s return to market has been a successful one under SAIC’s (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) watchful eye. And this is primarily down to a combination of affordable pricing and the offering of attainable electric cars.

Its impressive MG4 entered the market as the cheapest family-size model in Britain, while its 5 EV and ZS crossover both drastically undercut the competition on price. In 2024, it will sell the eagerly-anticipated Cyberster – a two-door roadster starting at around £50,000 that it hopes will replicate the popularity of its classic MGB in battery from.

However, it has yet to make a public declaration about going all-electric within decade.

Mini’s parent company, BMW Group, confirmed that Mini will transform into a fully-electric brand by 2030, with deadlines already set in stone for how it will transition.

It will launch its final new model with an internal combustion engine under the bonnet in 2025, hoping this will see half of all sales being electric cars by 2027.

At the 2023 Munich motor show, the car company unveiled its all-new Mini Electric hatchback and an all-electric version of the Countryman SUV. It has also committed to manufacturing EVs in Britain with a fresh investment in its Oxford car factory.

The Ariya SUV has joined the Leaf and e-NV200 Combi MPV in Nissan’s electric line-up. The Japanese firm has said it will sell only EVs in the UK from 2030

Nissan’s boss said in September 2023 that the world ‘needs to move on’ as he confirmed the Japanese firm would sell on electric cars from 2030 onwards.

Speaking just days after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pushed back the ban on new petrol and diesel engines from 2030 to 2035, Makoto Uchida said: ‘There’s no going back. The world needs to move on from internal combustion engines. We have a responsibility to be part of the solution.’

Referring to Sunak’s decision, Uchida said: ‘From this point on, every single new Nissan launched in Europe will be electric. It’s the right thing to do.’

Nissan is one of the car makers that has put the UK at the centre of its electric vehicle plans, with the building of its own battery-making gigaplant in Sunderland, where the Japanese giant’s car factory already produces the Leaf EV. It also offers the Ariya crossover, which is manufactured in Japan.

PEUGEOT

When is it going fully electric in the UK? 2030

Peugeot has promised five new EVs by the end of 2024 and says every new model in its line-up will be available with battery power from 2025. All but EVs will be removed from its UK showrooms from 2030

Peugeot has promised five new EVs by the end of 2024 and says every new model in its line-up will be available with battery power from 2025. All but EVs will be removed from its UK showrooms from 2030

Like its sister brands sitting under the Stellantis Group banner, electrification is very much at the heart of the Peugeot’s future strategy.

It has promised five new electric models will reach showrooms by the end of 2024 and every new Peugeot will be available as a full EV by 2025.

The French maker has also confirmed it will exclusively sell EVs in Europe from 2030. However, buyers outside of Europe will still be able to buy new petrol and diesel-powered Peugeots during the next decade, it has also said.

Peugeot’s long-term plans is to become carbon net zero by 2038.

The spin-off electric-only arm of Volvo is a recent new addition to the market.

It originally launched the Polestar 1, an exclusive – and ludicrously expensive – hybrid performance car, but models to follow will be more affordable, and more electric.

The Polestar 2 saloon on sale in a quality vehicle – one to definitely consider as an alternative to a Tesla Model 3 – and a Polestar 3 SUV, larger 4 SUV and Polestar 5 saloon should be on sale by 2026.

Porsche has started its transition to EVs earlier than other sports car rivals, but says the 911 will keep running on fossil fuel for as long as possible

Porsche has started its transition to EVs earlier than other sports car rivals, but says the 911 will keep running on fossil fuel for as long as possible

While many sportscar brands are delaying or refusing to put an exact deadline for when they will ditch big-capacity petrol engines, Porsche has already started to make the transition. The Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo sports car are genuine performance models that will make you think twice about hankering after a Porsche with an internal combustion engine.

Porsche says its expects at least 80 per cent of its vehicles sold globally to be partially or fully electric by 2030 – though it is the 911 that will be last on the list to shift to greener powertrains, with CEO Oliver Blume saying the legendary sportscar will be the ‘last Porsche which is going for full electrification,’ – and that’s if the nameplate is survived beyond the ban on new petrol cars.

A pure electric version of the Macan SUV is due in 2024, while a battery Boxster and Cayman are both set to arrive in 2025.

Renault has outlined its intention to be an all-electric car brand in Europe from 2030.

In an interview with Automotive News Europe in January 2022, CEO Luca de Meo is quoted as stating: ‘Renault will be 100 per cent electric in 2030 in Europe.’

This will see the acceleration of its previous plan to achieve 90 per cent EV sales in the region by that date. It has already confirmed the arrival of an all-electric reborn Renault 5 and 6.

Even ultra-luxurious car makers are having to prepare for a switch away from combustion engines, with Rolls-Royce no different.

It has already unveiled its first zero-emission car, the £330,000 Spectre, which we have already test driven.

The entire Rolls-Royce range will be battery powered by 2030, bosses have confirmed. Chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös, said: ‘Over the past decade, I have been repeatedly asked, when will Rolls-Royce go electric? And when will you produce your first electric car? I answered with an unambiguous promise: ‘Rolls-Royce will go electric, starting this decade. Today, I’m keeping my word.’

Seat had previously sold the Mii Electric but production has since ceased and there are no longer any battery EVs in showrooms. VW bosses have said that Seat will likely no longer exist as a passenger car brand by the time we get to 2030

Seat is unlikely to be a passenger car brand that sells new models by 2030, according to bosses at the VW Group.

The Spanish outfit is expected to stop making cars and will be fully replaced by the Cupra marque over the coming years as part of its German parent companies refreshed strategy.

Speaking at the 2023 Munich motor show, company chairman Thomas Schäfer said ‘the future of Seat is Cupra’. As for Seat, it will likely be rebranded for mobility solutions, like e-scooters and e-bikes.

Skoda says that by 2025 it will have six pure-electric models in its range. Currently, it has just the Enyaq iV (pictured) and Enyaq iV Coupe

Like the rest of the VW Group, Skoda has already ignited its transition to EVs – though still hasn’t put a firm date on when it will shift to exclusive electric sales.

In early 2023, the Czech marque announced it is in the midst of developing a range of new battery-powered models and it looks to add to its existing roster of the Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe.

It says it will have six EVs on sale by 2026.

Smart currently only sells one new model, and it’s electric. This compact SUV is called the #1 and will hit UK roads by the end of 2023

Smart has a jumpstart on most rivals with its electrification efforts, having ditched combustion engines entirely in 2019.

While you still might be able to find a handful of electric ‘EQ’ versions of the Fortwo and Forfour, these have relatively paltry ranges compared to other electric city cars on the market.

A more practical option is the new #1 compact SUV, a £35,950 family-friendly model with a range of up to 260 miles.

SSANGYONG

SsangYong’s first pure-electric vehicle, the Korando e-Motion – with a 211-mile range – is on sale and is an ‘affordable’ family SUV, making it a rival to MG and other budget-friendly EV models.

The company in 2023 also released its new Torres EVX crossover, though has yet to confirm if it will be sold in the UK.

The brand is yet to confirm when it will likely end the sale of new models with internal combustion engines.

Subaru already has one EV on sale in Britain. It’s called the Solterra and is the sister car to Toyota’s bZ4X following their recent partnership with its fellow Japanese manufacturer to ramp up the development of zero-emission-vehicle powertrains.

Subuaru bosses said Solterra would be the brand’s first step towards its long-term emissions goals, with the aim for all-electric and electrified vehicles to account for at least 40 per cent of global sales by 2030.

More recently, the company said it will launch three new EVs by 2026 – though hasn’t confirmed which, if any, will be sold in Britain.

Suzuki is another brand to have entered a joint venture with Toyota to produce EVs.

The Japanese marque will join the coalition led by Toyota to help the alliance expand its existing focus from trucks to smaller cars.

Bosses have confirmed Suzuki will launch its first pure-electric vehicle by 2025, which is currently referred to as the eVX concept. However, there’s no confirmation of when it will stop selling internal combustion engine models in Britain.

Tesla will sell a facelifted version of the Model 3 from 2024 with a range of up to 421 miles. Its Model Y is the best-selling EV in the UK

One brand that won’t even sniffle at the concept of a combustion engine ban is US EV maker Tesla, which has gone from strength to strength in the UK in recent years.

The Model Y has been the best-selling EV in in the UK since 2022 and the most affordable car it makes – the Model 3- has received a comprehensive facelift and boost to range for 2024.

Talks of a Roadster the the Cybertruck launching could bolster the brand’s line-up, though it has stopped making the Model S and Model X in right-hand drive for UK customers. If you want one, you will need to pay close to £100k for one with the steering wheel on the wrong side.

TOYOTA

When is it going fully electric in the UK? UNCONFIRMED

This is Toyota’s bz4x SUV – its first electric model with batteries and not a hydrogen fuel cell. The Japanese brand promises to have 30 EVs in its range (alongside Lexus) by 2030

Having been the leading brand for green eco cars with the launch of the Prius before the turn of the century and a plethora of hybrid cars since, Toyota has somehow slipped towards the back of the pecking order when it comes to the transition to electric vehicles.

It’s original plan appeared to be experimenting with alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, having launched two version of its Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car. While the new saloon is just shy of £50,000, the original cost in excess of £65,000 – prices that have made it hugely unpopular with potential customers.

It has recently changed tactic, though, partnering with a number of other Japanese car makers to develop future battery-electric models and brought to market its first EV, the bZ4X SUV.

Bosses at the end of 2021 outlined Toyota and Lexus’ plans to launch a total of 30 battery EVs by 2030 and sell 3.5 million fully-electric models by the end of the decade. But while Lexus has set out plans to have only electric cars in showrooms from 2030, Toyota is yet to do the same – though bosses have hinted at 2035 as the date it stops selling petrol and diesel cars.

VAUXHALL

When is it going fully electric in the UK? 2028

From 2028, Vauxhall will no longer sell you a car or van with a petrol or diesel engine under the bonnet. Its Astra-e (pictured), Corsa-e and Mokka-e are all already on sale

Vauxhall appears to be one brand that has signalled its switch to EVs mostly as a result of direction from ministers.

It says on its website: ‘The UK Government has banned the sale of petrol and diesel-powered new vehicles from 2030, and will only allow zero emissions-in-use vehicles from 2035.

‘But we’re not waiting until then. From 2028, Vauxhall will only sell 100 per cent electric cars and vans, seven years ahead of the government deadline. We’re leading from the front with electric.’

Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant near Liverpool, which for decades produced the Astra family car, became the nation’s first EV-only manufacturing site in 2023.

The concept version of the VW ID.2 has already been unveiled ahead of its arrival to market in 2026. The manufacturer claims it will cost no more than €25,000 – that’s £22,000 – when it eventually hits UK showrooms

The 2015 dieselgate scandal kick-started Volkswagen’s pledge to make more economical cars, and it is delivering on its promises to electrify its range.

Its first attempts at electric cars were existing models with batteries slung into them – like the e-Up! and e-Golf – but it now has a dedicated line-up under the ‘ID’ banner, which includes models like the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.Buzz MPV.

It has also promised an ‘affordable’ ID.2 as early as 2026 starting from no more than £22,000 – and an even less expensive ID.1 could follow years later.

In 2022, boss Thomas Schaefer said Volkswagen will only produce electric cars in Europe from 2033, committing to an earlier date than its previous 2033-to-2035 target.

VOLVO

Volvo says that 50% of its global sales should be fully-electric cars (like the C40 Recharge pictured) by 2025. From 2030, it will remove all petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles from its virtual showrooms

Volvo has recently scrapped all diesel variants from its showrooms and will do the same with petrol engines before the end of the decade.

The Swedish carmaker, which is owned by Hangzhou-based Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, says that 50 per cent of its global sales should be fully-electric cars by 2025 – and the other half hybrid models.

From 2025, it will release a pure-electric model every year until 2030 when it will banish petrol and hybrid drivetrains entirely and sell only EVs – but not in showrooms, in online stores exclusively.
