A deadly blast Tuesday at the compound of the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza had reverberations across the region, coming hours before President Biden landed in Israel in a visit designed as a show of support. The explosion prompted competing versions of the events that led to it, from both sides of the fighting. Here is a look at what transpired.
What exactly happened?
According to the Hamas-run Gaza health authorities, the explosion killed 471 people, including staff, patients and civilians who had taken refuge inside the hospital following an evacuation order from Israel. The number of dead couldn’t be independently verified. Israel said Wednesday that it didn’t know how many people had died.
