KOLKATA/DURGAPUR: An academic from Durgapur, who was working as a research guide at a university in Sweden, was recently found dead in her apartment near the university campus, with her family alleging murder. A person has even been arrested in this connection, her family has been informed.

The last time Roshni Das contacted home – she spoke to her mother, Mamata – was on September 29. The next day onwards, her phone was switched off, setting alarm bells ringing. It was only on Friday (October 13) that someone “from the Bengal police directorate at Bhabani Bhawan, Kolkata,” called up to say that Roshni had been found dead and that her body was kept in a morgue at the medical college of Umea University, where she worked, her family told TOI.

A distraught Mamata also said that the family was told by the cops that the Stockholm Police had also emailed the Centre about the arrest of the suspect.

Roshni, her parents’ only child, graduated in biotechnology from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) Bhubaneshwar, and moved to Sweden for her PhD. After completing her doctorate, she became a research guide at the department of public health and clinical medicine at the university. She used to stay off-campus in Sandba-cka, about 2km from Umea.

Roshni had also published a paper in the per-reviewed ‘Journal of Internal Medicine’ on new medical treatments against cognitive impairments like dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Roshni’s cousin, Supradip Das, said: “We were informed that someone had murdered Roshni in her apartment. We are in the dark about the reason for the murder. We request cooperation from Sweden and the government of India to have Roshni’s body returned to us and to bring to justice those who hurt her. We also want stringent action to ensure no such incidents happen in the future.”

Her mother urged both the Centre and the state government for help in bringing the body back home.

Mamata Das, the mother of academic Roshni Das, who was allegedly murdered in her flat in Sweden, said: “I neither have the financial means nor travel documents to bring her back. I request the governments of India and Sweden to help bring her back to me.”

One of Roshni’s cousins said, “I met the officer who called us at Bhabani Bhawan, and saw the email the cops got. It said Roshni was murdered. It also said she died on September 30,” she said. The cousins questioned why the Stockholm Police took around two weeks to inform the family.

CM Mamata Banerjee has instructed minister Pradip Majumdar to accompany Durgapur mayor Anindita Mukherjee to Roshni’s home and assure the family of help. The state was also in touch with the Centre, sources said.

The family is in touch with the ministry of external affairs, local MP S S Ahluwalia, local cops and Bhabani Bhawan for updates. TOI tried to get in touch with the honorary consul general of Sweden to Kolkata, Ranajit Nobis, about the Swedish Embassy’s involvement, but he was unavailable for comment.
