Feastable Chocolate Bars – created by YouTuber MrBeast – have launched in South Africa.
The bars are available at Makro and Game stores across the country for R49.95 in four different varieties, including peanut butter, milk chocolate, crispy and original.
The new chocolate brand will launch in a relatively saturated market, where classics like Cadbury, Beacon and Nestle have a strong footing, and at a “luxury” price point where brands like Lindt or locally-produced Nova already play.
As fans of chocolate in general, the BusinessTech team decided to do a blind taste testing of various milk chocolate bars to see if Mr Beast’s push into the market can compete with the sensations our refined and discerning South African palates are accustomed to.
For the test, each member of the team got to try seven different bits of chocolate and scored each one according to taste.
The chocolates included: Mr Beast Original; Mr Beast Milk Chocolate; Cadbury Milk Chocolate; Nestle Aero; Lindor Milk Chocolate; Beacon Delicious Milk Chocolate; Nova Milk Chocolate.
Nestle milk chocolate bars were not available at local retailers, so the closest alternative was used.
Mr Beast Original is also much closer to a dark chocolate bar, so only the milk chocolate version was used in the final ranking.
In the taste-testing, everyone was asked to factor in things like sweetness, mouth-feel and general chocolatey-ness.
These were the results:
Chocolate | Score |
Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate | 8.4 |
Cadbury Milk Chocolate | 7.6 |
Nestle Aero Milk Chocolate | 6.9 |
Mr Beast Milk Chocolate | 6.0 |
Nova Milk Chocolate | 5.6 |
Beacon Heavenly Milk Chocolate | 5.2 |
From the results, it is clear that the luxury creaminess of Lindt’s Lindor is the best milk chocolate bar among the lot – however, this is to be expected, given the high price point.
Interestingly, it’s Cadbury’s milk chocolate that emerged as the second favourite – and at a much lower price point, is likely to be the go-to when looking for a confectionary treat.
Mr Beast’s milk chocolate scored fairly well, overall, coming in just below average (average being 6.6/10 in this test).
However, despite ranking around the middle of the pack in our testing, the Mr Beast chocolates performed better than many expected.
Coming from a United States YouTube celebrity, many testers expected the bar to follow the more “American-style” chocolate texture, which is higher in sugar and lower in fat than the more UK-based varieties we are used to in South Africa.
American chocolates tend to be waxier and more grainy in texture – whereas the Mr Beast bars were smooth in the mouth and had a flavour profile more aligned with the high-fat UK chocolates we are accustomed to. The bars definitely beat expectations.
The main sticking point, however, remains the price.
At R50 for 60 grams, the Mr Beast bars come in as the priciest option on the list, with a cost per gram of 83 cents.
This is higher than the Lindt Lindor slab, which costs around R70 for a 100g bar (70 cents per gram).
Chocolate | Size | Price | Per g |
Mr Beast Milk Chocolate | 60g | R49.95 | 83 cents |
Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate | 100g | R69.95 | 70 cents |
Nova Milk Chocolate | 100g | R51.00 | 51 cents |
Cadbury Milk Chocolate | 80g | R19.95 | 25 cents |
Nestle Aero Milk Chocolate | 85g | R19.95 | 23 cents |
Beacon Heavenly Milk Chocolate | 80g | R14.95 | 18 cents |
As with all things relating to taste – preferences will differ.
While the new Mr Beast bar certainly tested better than many of us expected, the high price point for what is ultimately an average chocolate bar may be a little bit too much for South Africans to stomach.
Disclaimer: Taste is subjective, and as the scores show, opinions on chocolates can differ greatly. All chocolates were procured from local retailers. The rankings are not exhaustive or comprehensive, as other brands also make chocolate variants. This list is just a bit of fun; please don’t email us complaining that your favourite chocolate brand was ranked low.
