WILLMAR

— Walt’s of Willmar, a longtime gas station, convenience store, car wash and oil change business, was recently recognized by the Minnesota Retailers Association as Community Partner of the Year for 2023-24.

The award is given each year as part of the Minnesota’s Retail Champions program, honoring organizations that make their communities a better place, according to a news release from the Minnesota Retailers Association.

Walt’s earned the award through active work in the community, supporting fundraising efforts, providing donations and more.

Scott Barney, co-owner of Walt’s, reflected on the spirit of giving passed down from the founder and namesake, Walt Gislason.

“I don’t think there’s ever been someone who’s walked through these doors that’s said ‘We have a fundraiser,’ that we’ve ever said no to,” Barney said in the release.

is one of 12 awards given by the Minnesota’s Retail Champions program.

“Walt’s is a key community partner and a great example of what makes the Willmar Lakes Area an exceptional community,” said Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce retiring President Ken Warner. “The team at Walt’s shows up every day to make a difference, and at the Chamber we couldn’t be more grateful for the example they set for others.”

Barney and Walt’s other co-owners were invited to accept the award Oct. 11 at an event in Bloomington.
