Welcome to Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call, a daily rundown of the top news for lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel.

  • Clifford Chance is embracing permanent hybrid working, and it’s getting the open plan hot desking to prove it. In sharp contrast to some US firms hankering to get their staff back to their desks, the Magic Circle giant is designing its new office around an assumption that fee-earners will never again work five (or six, or seven) days in the office. “It has been made categorically clear to me from leadership and to everyone at the firm that at our firm, hybrid working is here to stay,” said a source close to management at Clifford Chance. • The pair of Miami lawyers who successfully defended Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum on federal fraud charges revealed juicy details about the case, their battles with the judge and the “crazy” behavior of a couple of holdout jurors in a recent podcast episode. (Tallahassee Democrat)
  • Pro-XRP lawyers Bill Morgan and John Deaton have taken a swipe at the US Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler following his recent comments, with Deaton opining in a tweet that people like Gensler “are inherently arrogant” and think “they are above the law.” He further labeled the SEC chair a “real life example of a megalomaniac.” The SEC is involved in an ongoing legal battle against Ripple, a case that could determine whether crypto tokens are indeed securities.
