UYN, the brand founded by design and manufacturing company Trerè Innovation, has opened its new research and development lab in Italy.

The new facility for UYN — an acronym for “Unleash Your Nature” and pronounced “Win” — is dubbed the Academy for Research and Engineering in Apparel and Sport (AREAS). It is adjacent to its global headquarters in Asola, and was described by the company as “an academy for scholars and young talents in the textile field, and a creative hub for product and communication design.”

The research and development lab — which was made possible with an investment from the company of more than 2 million euros (roughly $2.1 million at the current conversion rate) — will serve as the home to its bio-based apparel, footwear and accessory designers and creators. The building spans 38,000 square feet.

“AREAS was born out of a dream to create the most advanced research academy in the world within the technical apparel sector,” Trerè Innovation CEO Marco Redini said in a statement. “We not only wanted to create a physical space for ideation, but also, an ideal venue where multiple fields of knowledge from science to design and communication to art can come together. AREAS is setting the path for us to build the future and design what does not yet exist.”

There are several departments within AREAS. The Brain Unit, for instance, was described by UYN as the core of the laboratory. It is a climate chamber with controlled temperature and humidity where athletes and products are tested. It features a station that studies athlete’s motion and cognitive abilities, neuro-reactive treadmills developed by Reaxing, a Titici bike station with oscillating platforms and a thermal robotic mannequin, dubbed “Hyper,” that overheats, cools and sweats like an athlete. The methodology of the tests and the analysis of the results, according to UYN, are carried out in collaboration with the Research Centre Sport, Mountain and Health of the University of Verona

To test in extreme environments, the facility includes an Arctic Chamber, which measures the performance of clothing at -20°C, and a Monsoon Chamber, which tests the impermeability of garments under high-intensity water jets. There is also a Biotechnology Unit, which was added with for research of new bio-materials, mechanical and chemical tests on yarns to be implemented in production in mind, as well as to test on final products.

Aside from its function as a laboratory, UYN said AREAS is also a meeting place for scholars, scientists, engineers, communication experts and more who are “interested in sharing disruptive ideas.” To accomplish this, AREAS includes an open space on the second floor called Creativity,” which was described by the brand as “a think tank designed to foster the exchange and generation of ideas for apparel design, footwear design and product storytelling.” Trerè Innovation will employ work and educational programs for young talent and newly graduated students with career ambitions within technical apparel.

What’s more, Trerè Innovation said in a statement that it has chosen to make AREAS open to the public, and tours can be booked via UYNsports.com and AREAS-academy.com.

In March, Trerè Innovation launched UYN in the United States. The brand was established in 2018 and was sold in 27 countries before making its U.S. debut. Among its many products, UYN has ventured into creating footwear out of socks without seams. UYN makes footwear in men’s and women’s sizing for several categories, such as Biking, Active, Urban Outdoor and several others, with prices ranging from $149 to $319.
