2023 Nurse’s Week Awards Highlight Nurses’ Expertise and Dedication
Vermont Business Magazine The University of Vermont Medical Center has announced the recipients of the 2023 Nursing Awards & Scholarships, which were presented in May. These awards recognize the exceptional work of nurses at the Medical Center who demonstrate excellence in clinical practice, leadership, education, and patient care.
Nursing leaders and hospital administrators called the awards well-deserved recognition of the Medical Center’s nursing teams during the annual nationwide celebration of nurse’s dedication, compassion and clinical excellence.
“We are thrilled to recognize these exceptional nurses who are making a positive impact on the health and well-being of our patients every day, “ said Peg Gagne, Chief Nursing Officer of the Medical Center. “Their dedication and commitment to providing high-quality care to our patients are truly remarkable.”
“Nurses are the heart of our health care system, and we are fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated team of nurses at UVM Medical Center,” said Dr. Stephen Leffler, President and Chief Operating Officer. “These awards and scholarships recognize their outstanding achievements and contributions to our organization and the community.”
The following is a list of the awards and scholarships presented at the ceremony:
Paul W. Horton Award for Nursing Excellence: This award recognizes registered nurses who demonstrate excellence in clinical practice. The 2023 recipient of this award is Stephanie Rettew. Stephanie was selected for her anticipatory guidance, strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and her role as a clinical leader and role model.
Licensed Nursing Assistant Clinical Excellence Award: This award recognizes licensed nursing assistants who demonstrate exemplary patient care skills and communication skills. The 2023 recipient of this award is Penny Griffin-Kimball, who provides timely observations regarding patient response to care and participates in unit representative feedback for unit, departmental or organization-wide committees and initiatives.
Licensed Practical Nurse Excellence in Clinical Practice Award: This award recognizes licensed practical nurses who demonstrate exemplary clinical skills and strong communication skills. The 2023 recipient of this award is Marcijo Lombard, who collaborates with the healthcare team and participates in patient/family/staff education, and unit, department, or organization-wide committees or initiatives.
Sally Sample Award: This award recognizes a nurse manager who demonstrates leadership in advancing the quality of patient care through continuous performance improvement initiatives. The 2023 recipient of this award is Joy Schekter, who established expectations, developed plans, and managed the performance improvement process in conjunction with the nursing team.
Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing Award: This award recognizes an advanced practice registered nurse who demonstrates excellence in patient care, education, and commitment to the patients they serve. The 2023 recipients of this award are Kari Mattos and Erika Charkalis, who identify evidence-based best practices to improve patient care and work to implement change in collaboration with appropriate healthcare team members and committees.
Joan Webber Jones Award: This award recognizes a nurse educator who demonstrates excellence in the professional development of staff, exceptional engagement and motivation of staff, and exceptional clinical expertise. The 2023 recipient is Valarie Nick, a dedicated nurse educator who has made significant contributions to the development and success of the nurse residency program by implementing a comprehensive curriculum, coordinating expert training sessions, fostering collaboration with various disciplines, and creating a supportive environment for new nurses, exemplifying her commitment to enhancing nursing education and professional growth.
Kate FitzPatrick NPG Award: This award recognizes an exceptional nurse who has served on any of the councils of the UVM Medical Center’s Nursing Professional Governance Council (NPG) structure and spends a majority of their time providing direct care. The 2023 recipient is Aaron Early, who was nominated for being an active member of the NPG, serving as a leader for the past two years, exemplifying servant leadership and advocating for the betterment of nursing and patient care while representing his unit’s best interests.
UVM Medical Center Preceptor Excellence Award: This award recognizes preceptors for their crucial role and outstanding contributions in mentoring students and onboarding new and experienced registered nurses (RNs). MaryKate Canavan, the 2023 recipient, was nominated for providing exceptional support, demonstrating vast orthopedic knowledge, and fostering seamless transitions.
