The first planned two-day strike by security staff at London Heathrow this summer has been called off after the airport made an improved pay offer to workers.
The Unite union last week announced 31 days of strike action by 2,000 security officers up to the end of August in a long-running dispute with Heathrow Airports Ltd (HAL) over pay.
But the first two days of planned action on 24-25 June have now been called off after the airport made an improved pay offer following talks with Unite last week. This deal will now be put to members in a ballot.
Unite said that the initial strikes had been postponed as a “gesture of goodwill”. But it warned that the remaining 29 days of industrial action, which are due to start on 28 June, will go ahead as planned if its members reject Heathrow’s latest pay offer.
Wayne King, Unite’s regional co-ordinating officer, added: “Following extensive negotiations last week a new offer was put forward by HAL. Members will now be balloted on the latest offer and they will decide whether or not it meets their expectations.”
