United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has rewarded USD 500 to different refugees to invest and expand their businesses.
The reward was given to the proprietors of Voice of Refugees, Mat Habestan Daycare and Black Girl Magic on October 20th, 2023 in a program dubbed ‘Empowerment through pitch training’.
The three emerged as the best out of ten business ideas that were pitched by refugees during the final pitching ceremony held at Makerere University Business School (MUBS).
Voice of Refugees, a business that focuses on bridging the refugee communication gap, emerged as the overall best. Black Girl Magic, a cosmetic business run by a South Sudanese urban refugee, was the second while Mat Habestan Daycare, which is a daycare baby seating center for refugees mothers, came third.
Other businesses that participated include Heritage Bites, Shelter Connect, Elleni Medical Care, Tad’s Designers, Solar System Solutions, Avala Pharmaceuticals Limited, Black Members Empire and African Marketing.
The entrepreneurs were judged by a panel of three judges and requested not to abandon their business ideas, as they are all brilliant and can be of great developmental value to the refugee community.
Dr. Diana Ntami Nandagire, director MUBS Entrepreneurship Center, urged the participants to be flexible depending on the feedback they get from the market and reassured them of MUBS’ commitment to continue supporting them to ensure that they thrive in their respective businesses.
The Empowerment through Pitch Training Program is an Initiative by UNHCR and MUBS Entrepreneurship Center aimed at supporting refugees that have ventured in Entrepreneurship.
The initiative was aimed at equipping refugees with the necessary skills to pitch their ideas effectively and access funding opportunities. The program aimed at empowering refugees with entrepreneurial aspirations to articulate their innovative ideas and foster self-reliance and economic independence.
