(ANSA) – ROME, OCT 2 – Italy’s unemployment rate dropped to
7.3% in August, the lowest since it was at the same level in
January 2009, after falling 0.2 of a percentage point with
respect to July, Istat said on Monday.

The national statistics agency added that the jobless rate for
under-25s who are active on the labour market was 0.1 of a point
down to 22%.

Istat said the number of people looking for work in Italy was
down by 62,000 in August on July.

The agency said that, after dropping in July, the number of
people in employment went back up again in August, with a rise
of 59,000 (0.3%) in month-on-month terms, thanks largely to a
39,000 increase in the number of people working on temporary
contracts.

As a result, the employment rate rose by 0.1 of a point to
61.5%.

Istat said 523,000 more people were in work in August than in
the same month in 2023. It said the year-on-year increase was
driven by a rise in the number of people working on permanent
contracts. (ANSA).
