Ukraine plans to continue fighting despite difficult counteroffensive, Zelenskyy says

Ukraine has a plan to continue fighting against Russian forces despite the difficulty of its counteroffensive and Western leaders dealing with the conflict in the Middle East, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

Speaking in an interview by video link at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York, the president said Ukrainian forces would still try to deliver a result on the battlefield this year, and that he was sure they would be successful.

He also said Ukrainians were concerned with certain voices in the US Republican Party calling to cut back support for Kyiv.

How is the counteroffensive going?

After Ukraine made territorial gains in the second half of 2022, hopes were high in Kyiv for further significant successes this year.

But the gains so far have been small, as improved Russian defences proved effective, and any momentum created in the south and east looks to have run out of steam for now.

The weather is turning wet, making the ground difficult to navigate for heavy equipment.
