The wife of Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza says she is “baffled” as to why the British government has not yet imposed sanctions on those involved in her husband’s trial.

The British-Russian opposition leader has been jailed in Russia for 25 years after being found guilty of treason.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly condemned the decision today, saying Mr Kara-Murza “bravely denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine”.

But Evgenia Kara-Murza said that, though she was grateful for the support of the Foreign Office, more needs to be done.

She said she wants to see the British government “actually do something” and introduce sanctions against the “violators” of her husband’s rights.

Mrs Kara-Murza pointed to the example of Canada, which has introduced sanctions despite her husband not holding Canadian citizenship.

She says her husband’s health is rapidly deteriorating and he is now “dragging both his feet”.

“It is honestly becoming a question of life and death. Expressions of concern are not enough anymore.”

The dissident’s wife likened his prison term to those handed out under Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

In an interview with Andrew Marr on LBC, Mrs Kara-Murza also called the British government’s response “weak”.

“Everything has to be done now to ensure his release and he gets access to proper medical care,” she told the radio station.
