Vladimir Putin is discussing Russia’s economic situation as he appears via videolink at the BRICS summit.
He says Russia is part of the five most economically powerful countries in the world despite “pessimistic outlooks” from Western experts.
The Russian president says his country has seen more than 6% growth and an increase in its economy over a three-year basis.
Still, he says there is volatility in the financial, energy and other markets, and that state and private debts are rising.
He calls for BRICS partners to cooperate on equal terms, and also offers an update on his offer of free grain for African countries – which he says talks are almost finished on.
Russia remains and will be a reliable food supplier to Africa, he says.
Mr Putin also said the BRICS grouping was on course to meet the aspirations of most of the world’s population.
“We cooperate on the principles of equality, partnership support, respect for each other’s interests, and this is the essence of the future-oriented strategic course of our association, a course that meets the aspirations of the main part of the world community, the so-called global majority,” he said.
BRICS members represent more than 40% of the world’s population currently.
The summit is expected to discuss adding new members, but Mr Putin did not address this in his remarks.
