The UK continues to see the highest level of hotel development in Europe – well ahead of Germany in second place.
Figures from hotel industry data firm Lodging Econometrics show that there were 1,715 hotels in the construction or planning phase across Europe during the second quarter. These properties would add more than 250,000 rooms if they all go ahead.
The UK leads the way with 322 projects and 45,000 rooms – by comparison Germany’s pipeline consists of 211 projects and 35,000 rooms. London is also the top city for hotel development in Europe with 82 projects, which would add nearly 15,000 rooms to the UK capital’s inventory.
Other countries in the top five in Europe are France (132 hotel projects), Portugal (127) and Turkey (107).
Lodging Econometrics said that a total of 150 new hotels debuted across Europe during the first half of 2023, which added a total of 20,000 rooms. This pace is set to increase during the rest of the year with another 265 properties due to open adding 35,500 rooms.
Accor’s budget brand Ibis has the highest number of new hotels in the pipeline in Europe with 91 projects, following by Hampton by Hilton (71 properties), IHG’s Holiday Inn Express (45 hotels) and Marriott’s Moxy (38 projects).
But Europe’s hotel development is dwarfed by the scale of projects in the US and China, which collectively account for 63 per cent of the global construction pipeline.
The US has 5,572 hotel projects and 660,000 rooms under construction or in planning. Meanwhile China’s pipeline stands at 3,666 projects and 679,000 rooms as the country has more larger resorts under development.
