U.S. Steel won a prestigious Steelie Award for innovation, gaining recognition for a new steel grade.
The Brussels, Belgium-based World Steel Association recently gave out its annual Steelie Awards. U.S. Steel, a major Calumet Region employer that founded the city of Gary as a company town and still employs thousands today, won Innovation of the Year.
The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker was recognized for the development of a high-strength, high-formable, lean, single-phase, nano-precipitation-strengthened sheet steel for cars. The new grade of steel was developed and is produced at U.S. Steel’s Big River mill in Arkansas.
HBIS Group Co. won Excellence in Low-Carbon Steel Production for coming up with a new coke oven gas zero-reforming direct reduced iron process it combines with an electric arc furnace. POSCO received Excellence in Sustainability for its iron-enhanced slag silicate fertilizer that reduces methane emissions in rice farming.

CITIC Pacific Special Steel Group Co. earned an Excellence in Life Cycle Assessment Award for developing China’s first product category rule for steel used in auto parts.
Ternium won Excellence in Education and Training for coming up with a continuous casting simulator that provides immersive virtual reality training for operators.
Gerdau S.A. received the Excellence in Communications Programs award for making steel an attraction at a music and entertainment festival.
The World Steel Association represents roughly 85% of the global steel production, including steelmakers in every major steel-producing country around the globe.
