The new Renault Captur and the much-anticipated next-gen VW Amarok are officially on sale in South Africa.

The Renault Captur will offer two trim lines with a starting price of R454,999, while the VW Amarok provides a whopping 12 specifications ranging from a starting price of R599,000 to R1,105,000.

The Captur is the first of five new vehicles the french carmaker plans to launch in South Africa in 2023, including an updated Duster and Koleos SUVs, an all-new Megane R.S.300, and the new Oroch bakkie.

While the 12 variants of the VW Amarok are only available as a double-cap, the company assured that single-cab styles are also coming, but they are only due to arrive in the second quarter of the year, with the pricing and model line-up to be announced closer to the time, reported TopAuto.

The features and specifications of the new Captur and Amarok are listed below.

Renault Captur 

The two Captur trim lines Renault offers are the Zen and Intens, the latter being the carmaker’s top-spec Captur model.

According to TopAuto, both models will come standard with automatic LED headlights with daytime running lights, rain-sensing wipers, climate control, a multifunction steering wheel, front and rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, hill-start assist, cruise control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In the pricier Captur Intens, the attachments continue with a wireless charger, multi-sense ambient lighting, a synthetic leather steering wheel and gear lever, an electronic handbrake with auto brake hold, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warnings, and a Diamond Black roof.

The range-topper also gets a larger 9-inch driver’s display and a 9.3-inch central touchscreen, while the Zen features a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and 7-inch infotainment system.

Performance

TopAuto also noted that the Captur range receives one engine option, a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol block capable of producing 113kW and 270Nm.

Both hatchbacks are front-wheel drive and deliver power to the surface via a seven-speed automatic gearbox, obtaining a claimed fuel usage of 6.6l/100km and a 0-100km/h time of 9.6 seconds.

Eco, Normal, and Sport drive modes are also included, while the range-topping Intens specification gets a “flying console” with an e-shifter gear lever.

VW Amarok

All Amarok variations will come standard with LED headlights, a multifunction steering wheel, an 8.0-inch digital cockpit, a 10-inch central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and cruise control.

Optional upgrades include a leather steering wheel, an electronic parking brake, front parking sensors, a power tailgate lock, 17-inch “Combra” wheels on the 125kW variant, front-seat heating, and 18-inch Amadora rims on the 154kW one, reported TopAuto.

The Style’s offerings continue with keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, Savona leather upholstery, heated front seats, ambient lighting, a 12-inch digital driver’s cluster, a 12-inch infotainment screen, high-beam assist, a multi-collision brake system, autonomous emergency braking, and lane assist.

The Aventura and PanAmericana are presented as the range-toppers, the former being the city crawler and the latter the off-road-focused 4×4.

Both feature IQ.Light LED headlights, LED tail lights, a Harmon Kardon stereo, the Discover Media navigation system, “Cricket” leather seats, rear cross-traffic alert, park assist, front assist with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, a 360-degree camera, driver fatigue detection, evasive steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, and either black 18-inch Amadora or 20-inch Bendigo wheels.

The PanAmericana is set apart by a black tubular styling bar, silver roof rails, a load box bed liner, metal underbody protection, and improved suspension as standard.

On the other hand, the Aventura brings a body-colour sports bar, an electric roller cover for the load bed, premium carpet floor mats, 21-inch Varberg rims, and chrome finishes for the mirrors, door handles, and side steps.

Performance

The base TDI exclusively comes with a five-speed manual gearbox, the 125kW mates with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, and the Bi-TDI and V6 are only shipped with a 10-speed auto-box.

The entire Amarok line-up is now capable of hauling loads of up to 1.19 tonnes in the rear box and towing a maximum of 3,500kg while boasting a maximum water wading depth of 800mm.

Between the 12 Amaroks on the market, there are four turbo-diesel engines, with the specifications of these powertrains detailed below, as outlined by TopAuto.
