Two mobile fish and chip businesses are flying the flag for Lincolnshire after being ranked among the best in the UK. The National Fish & Chip Awards is an annual event which celebrates the best chippies that the UK has to offer.
The Hungry Plaice, based in Holbeach, has reached the top three shortlist for the ‘Best Mobile Operator’ with the winner to be announced at a ceremony in London in February 2024. A Salt n Battery, based in North Lincolnshire, was placed in the top five for ‘Best Newcomer’ in the UK – the only mobile business to do so.
Georgina Lee-Price founded The Hungry Plaice with her husband Justin in 2017, starting out in a 1983 MK2 Transit van named ‘Betty’. They now have three vans altogether and attend weddings, private and corporate events all over the country – including catering at the Warner Brothers studio.

Georgina said: “We entered last year and came top five so we thought let’s have a look at what we can improve. We were absolutely delighted when we heard the news. To be able to get into that for such a prestigious award is really satisfying and very exciting.”
The Hungry Plaice now employs one full-time and eight part-time members of staff, as well as Georgina and Justin. Georgina said they would be “delighted” to win the award to represent the small businesses in the Lincolnshire area.
Alison Brady is the founder of A Salt n Battery which is based in Crowle, North Lincolnshire. She used to be a flight attendant on private aeroplanes but decided to start her own mobile fish and chip company following the impacts of covid on the aviation industry.
A Salt n Battery brings bespoke catering to Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and all of Yorkshire – serving local villages as well as private and corporate events. All of their ingredients are Lincolnshire sourced, with batter from Gainsborough, fresh Grimsby fish and potatoes grown five miles from their base in Crowle.
Speaking about the company’s achievement of top five in the ‘Best Newcomers’ category, Alison said: “We’re the only mobile one in the category, the others are proper chip shops so we’re really proud of that.” A Salt n Battery has only been running for 18 months and is going from strength to strength.
Elsewhere in Lincolnshire, a fish and chip shop in Chapel St Leonards made top 10 in the ‘Takeaway of the Year’ category.
