Veterinary Service officers have found two bears kept in captivity in a Nicosia establishment whose owner has neither a zoo license nor one in animal intra-community trader/business.

This is what Philenews reported on Thursday, adding that the specific owner had been reported to police and Parliament was also informed on the issue by Veterinary Service head Christodoulos Pipis.

Pipis told Parliament the documents accompanying the importation of the animals were requested on August 16, but these were never submitted by the owner.

On August 28, a Service officer went to a local police station and filed a written complaint.

On September 12, the officer in charge of the police station contacted the district veterinary office informing that the investigator in charge of the case would contact Veterinary Services and submit a statement of facts.

Considering that the owner of the premises is in breach of the provisions of the legislation in force the Veterinary Service  has appealed to Court to prohibit him from keeping wild animals in his premises in accordance with the provisions of the relevant legislation.
