ELIMSPORT – TWO-ALARM BLAZE DAMAGES THREE STRUCTURES – “I was just trying to save the garage, trying to stop the building from catching fire. I just couldn’t,” Dan Voneida said as smoke poured from the building on Sunday morning.
Fire broke out at Voneida’s property at 723 Petersburg Road, just south of here, about 7:05 a.m.
His wife Karen looked out and saw the small structure that houses the family’s wood-burning stove on fire. She called 911 while her husband ran outside and started to attack the fire with a garden hose.
“I tried to stop it. I never saw anything like it,” Voneida said.
The flames had already consumed the first outbuilding and had quickly spread to another.
Radiant heat then ignited the garage near the building’s roof and the fire came down the side of the structure, Voneida explained.
Initially dispatched as a shed fire for Elimsport firefighters, a fire officer quickly ordered additional equipment and manpower from Clinton Township and Montgomery to the scene. Minutes later, he ordered a second alarm, bringing more equipment from South Williamsport, White Deer Township, Warrior Run Area, Nippenose Valley and Nisbet.
There were no reports of injuries, and the fire did not reach the family’s home, less than 50 feet away.
The two-story garage was reportedly filled with items Voneida and his father, Donald, who actually owns the land, collected from their 20-plus year auction business.
Family members, friends and neighbors helped carry some items out of the burning garage with the hope of saving them.
The fire was brought under control shortly before 9 a.m. There was nothing suspicious about the cause of the fire at this time.
