Trolley District announces new businesses coming to East Market, surrounding area

A month after losing one of its biggest and earliest tenants, the owners of East Market have announced new businesses coming to the Near East Side food hall and surrounding area within the Trolley District development.

Barrel & Boar, which closed one of its barbecue restaurants in August inside Uptown Westerville’s old State Theater, hopes to open at East Market before the end of the year. It will occupy some of the space used in the market by former tenant Butcher & Grocer, which sold meat, produce and other items across seven market stalls.

A new business called Trolley Market will take over the rest of the Butcher & Grocer space to offer fresh salads, smoothies and juices, as well as fresh produce and grocery items. It’s owned by Hichan Ouhammou, who also operates Taste of Greece & Moroccan Street Food at East Market.

Aubrey Stevens, director of operations and leasing for East Market, said Trolley Market is scheduled to open in early November.

A Columbus Monthly magazine story in August detailed complaints from Near East Side neighborhood leaders who said the market lacked fresh produce and grocery options and needed more affordable prices at its businesses.

East Market’s announcement Tuesday used the word “affordable” twice to introduce Barrel & Boar and Trolley Market.

Other new tenants coming to the Trolley District development, which includes the food hall and several other buildings once part of the city’s trolley and streetcar operations:

  • Airriva, a rapidly expanding short-term lodging company that owns boutique properties in 10 states, will move 30 employees into office space inside a former trolley car barn east of the food hall. It’s the first physical office space for the five-year-old company, and CEO Josiah Myers called it “a significant milestone” that he hopes will bring about a stronger company culture.
  • A 12,000-square-foot coworking space called The Branch will occupy another portion of a former trolley car barn. It’s slated for an early 2024 opening, and is owned by Matthew Barnes, who also owns the private-membership Leisure Club in the East Market development.
  • Heath-based Homestead Beer Co. will join the market as part of Barrel & Boar’s location.
  • Urban Gourmet, another new venture from Ouhammou, opened this week. It sells burgers and chicken wings.
  • Buck City Sammies, which calls its sandwiches a modern take on traditional deli fare, is scheduled to open in late October. It operated out of an East Market pop-up stall early this year.
  • Monster Baby Donuts also plans to open in October. It has been selling gluten-free, vegan donuts at farmers markets and through other businesses.
