Tomb Raider Movie in Development, Amazon Eyes Multi-Medium Franchise

In addition to the news that a Tomb Raider television show written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is in development, it has now been revealed that a new Tomb Raider movie is also in the planning stages at Amazon.

According to THR, Amazon Studios has entered a “massive rights deal” with Dmitri M. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment to produce the television series, a video game, and also a movie. Similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Amazon plans on telling interconnected stories through different mediums with all three connected to each other in some form or another. While details are scarce on the movie, the overall rights deal is said to be one of Amazon’s largest commitments, only dwarfed by Lord of the Rings.

No word yet if Waller-Bridge will also be involved in the movie, although it’s been noted that she isn’t involved in the upcoming video game that was announced last year. Meanwhile, dj2 Entertainment is also working on bringing Life Is Strange and Disco Elysium to other mediums as it has found its niche adapting video game titles — with the Sonic the Hedgehog titles being its biggest success.

So far there have been three live-action Tomb Raider movies. Angelina Jolie starred in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s The Cradle of Life, while Alicia Vikander starred in a 2018 reboot, which was set to receive a sequel before being canceled last year after MGM lost the film rights (which were later acquired by its sister company Amazon Studios half a year later).
