In over a decade, you have been delivering innovative technology products for different and emerging markets. How have you succeeded in doing this well?
Creating a culture of innovation and learning to excel in delivering innovative technology products, I foster a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the team. Emphasising a growth mindset allows team members to embrace challenges, learn from failures, and continually seek new ways to enhance our products. I encourage open discussions and feedback sessions, where team members can freely share their ideas, concerns, and insights. There is strategic planning and ownership to ensure success. I believe in seeing things through from inception to completion. It involves meticulously planning our product development process, setting clear goals and objectives, and outlining actionable steps to achieve them. Each team member understands their role and responsibilities, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability for their contributions to the project.
Building robust relationships is a key element of our success and it lies in building and nurturing relationships horizontally and vertically. I believe in establishing strong connections within the team, encouraging collaboration and cross-functional communication. This enables us to harness the diverse skills and perspectives of each team member, resulting in well-rounded and innovative solutions. As a leader, I actively participate and contribute to the team’s efforts. I am not just delegating tasks but also involved in the product development process. By being hands-on, I can better understand the challenges and provide support when needed. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of unity within the team and encourages members to work together towards a shared goal.
Product management is a recent field of expertise. Tell us what it takes to thrive in this space.
Thriving in this field requires a unique combination of skills, qualities, and approaches. Here are the key factors that contribute to success in product management. First is a customer-centric approach. A successful product manager understands the importance of putting the customer at the centre of everything. They empathise with customer needs, pain points, and desires, ensuring that the product addresses real problems and delivers value to the target audience. Next is market and industry knowledge. Product managers need to stay informed about market trends, industry developments, and competitor activities. Keeping a finger on the pulse of the market helps them to make informed decisions, identify opportunities, and stay ahead of the competitor. Then there is strategic thinking. Thriving product managers are strategic thinkers. They define a clear product vision and roadmap that aligns with the overall business goals. A well-thought-out strategy guides decision-making, resource allocation, and prioritisation. Also, cross-functional collaboration is key.
This field involves working with various teams, and excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential to effectively convey the product vision, align teams, and ensure successful product development and launch. Also, successful product managers rely on data and analytics to make informed decisions. They gather and analyze relevant data, including user feedback, market research, and performance metrics, to validate assumptions and make data-backed choices. Furthermore, the tech industry is fast-paced and ever changing. Thriving product managers are adaptable, open to change, and quick to adjust their strategies based on new information or market shifts.Product managers are also responsible for delivering results, setting measurable goals, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs), and continuously evaluating product success. These are crucial to their effectiveness. While product managers may not always have direct authority over team members, strong leadership skills are essential. Motivating and influencing cross-functional teams, driving collaboration and fostering a positive and productive work environment are critical aspects of successful product management. Finally, thriving product managers are innovative thinkers who are not afraid to explore unconventional solutions. They encourage creativity within their teams and seek new ways to differentiate their products in the market.
You say you are driven by the desire to help career professionals become competent product managers. Tell us some of the ways you’re achieving this?
I’ve implemented several initiatives to achieve this feat. They includeproviding comprehensive information and insights into the field of product management in the areas of key skills, responsibilities, and best practices. Users can access valuable resources to enhance their understanding and expertise.I have also created a vibrant virtual and in-person community where product management professionals can come together to build personal connections, share experiences, and learn from one another. This fosters a supportive and collaborative environment that encourages growth and development. Our community hosts monthly webinars featuring renowned industry experts who share knowledge, experiences and expertise among members.
These webinars offer valuable insights and practical advice that can benefit aspiring and established product managers alike. To encourage open dialogue and continuous learning, I organise bi-weekly “Ask Me Anything” sessions, where members can directly interact with experienced product managers, ask questions and seek guidance on specific challenges they may be facing in their careers. I also utilize social media platforms like Instagram to conduct live sessions, providing bite-sized and interactive content for the community. In addition to the community support and knowledge sharing, we offer a specialised training school, where we equip aspiring and established product managers with the necessary tools, knowledge, and practical skills to elevate their capabilities and build exceptional tech products. Also, as an added bonus for students who complete our training programme, we offer an optional apprenticeship programme, providing them with a practical avenue to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in real-world settings. This apprenticeship opportunity is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, empowering participants to gain valuable hands-on experience as they work alongside experienced product managers in established organizations.
In the last decade, you have worked with major Unicorns in Africa. What key lessons would you say you learned in those years?
One of the most significant learning is the understanding of what it takes to build a unicorn company. Observing and being part of these successful startups has provided me with valuable insights into the characteristics and key factors that contribute to their success. First, building a unicorn requires having a truly disruptive and innovative idea. Unicorns are often born out of groundbreaking concepts that challenge traditional norms and address significant market gaps. Identifying such opportunities and having the vision to transform them into reality is a crucial aspect of building a unicorn. Additionally, unicorns are characterised by their ability to achieve rapid and scalable growth. They seize the opportunity to expand quickly, tapping into large addressable markets and leveraging technology to reach a global audience. This scalability is essential for achieving a valuation of over $1 billion. Having a customer-centric approach is another vital lesson. Unicorns prioritise understanding and meeting customer needs, delivering products or services that truly resonate with their target audience. Customer satisfaction and loyalty play a pivotal role in their success. Furthermore, a strong leadership team with a clear long-term vision is critical. Visionary founders guide successful unicorns and capable management teams who can navigate challenges, make strategic decisions, and drive the company towards its goals. Lastly, financial backing from investors is an important aspect of building a unicorn. Attracting substantial funding from venture capitalists and investors provides the necessary resources to fuel growth, expand operations, and stay ahead of competitors. By assimilating these learning into my approach as a product manager and business leader, I have gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to create a unicorn company. It has inspired me to be more innovative, customer-focused and customer-driven in my endeavours, always aiming to create exceptional products that have the potential to disrupt markets and achieve extraordinary growth.
While building a unicorn is a formidable challenge, the insights gained from working with these successful startups have undoubtedly influenced and enriched my approach to product management and business leadership.
Take us through your journey into founding ProductDive. What does it seek to achieve?
ProductDive was born out of a personal need and a passion for creating an impact in the field of product management. After securing my first product management role, I faced challenges in understanding the full scope of the role due to limited available resources and communities to learn from. Recognising that this was not just my struggle but a common problem faced by others, the idea for ProductDive took root. In September 2019, we officially launched as a community where product managers could come together, share experiences, and learn from experts. The primary goal was to create a space where aspiring and established product managers could elevate their skills, gain knowledge, and build exceptional tech products. Since its inception, it has evolved into something I am truly proud of. We have elevated the performances of over 1,500 career professionals and it has been gratifying to witness the impact we have made on the product management community, not just locally but globally.
We have cultivated a strong community where people come together to share ideas, collaborate, and grow. One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been witnessing the growth of our community. Today, it is heartening to see that hardly any startup in Nigeria exists without a #ProductDiver, and this showcases the impact we have made on the product management ecosystem in the region. Moreover, we have facilitated meaningful connections and networking opportunities, allowing members to build valuable relationships and career opportunities. We have also organised career fairs where companies come to recruit our students who have successfully completed their training programmes, further demonstrating the value and relevance of our initiatives. Overall, the journey of building ProductDive has been fulfilling and has shown me the power of community and collaboration. It has reaffirmed my belief in the importance of providing aspiring and established product managers with the resources, knowledge, and support they need to thrive in their careers and make a meaningful impact in the tech industry. As we continue to grow and expand, I look forward to further empowering product managers worldwide through ProductDive.

What is one thing you wish you would change to improve the lives of Nigerian women if you could?
It would be to empower them with access to quality education and skills that grant them financial freedom. Education is a fundamental right that has the potential to transform lives and break down barriers, but unfortunately, many Nigerian women still face the challenge of limited access to education. By focusing on education and skill development, we can equip women with the knowledge and tools they need to excel in various fields, including entrepreneurship, technology, and other industries. Providing opportunities for women to acquire valuable skills not only enhances their employability but also opens doors to financial independence and economic empowerment. Moreover, when women are economically empowered, it has ripple positive effects throughout their families and communities. Financially independent women can better support their families, make informed decisions about their well being, and actively participate in shaping their communities’ future.
What does a typical day in your life look like?
A typical day in my life involves balancing the roles of a wife, a mother of two, a product management professional and an entrepreneur. I prioritise showing up as much as I can for my family while juggling tasks and overseeing my ventures. Multitasking is key as I switch between responsibilities, responding to emails, and caring for my family. Despite the challenges, I find fulfillment in making a positive impact through education, empowering aspiring product managers, and using technology for social good. Each day is a rewarding journey of growth and inspiration.
If you were not doing what you do now, what else you would have been doing?
I would have pursued a career in education. Education has always been a passion of mine, and I believe in its transformative power to shape minds and create a positive impact on individuals and society as a whole. In this alternative path, I would have explored opportunities in educational leadership, curriculum development, or even teaching. I would have been committed to creating innovative and inclusive learning environments, empowering students with knowledge and skills to thrive in the rapidly evolving world. Moreover, I might have considered roles in educational policy and advocacy, working towards improving access to quality education for underserved communities. Ensuring that every individual has access to a strong education is a cause I’m passionate about and I would have worked tirelessly to make a difference in this area. Regardless of the path I would have taken, my core values of making a positive impact, fostering growth, and empowering others to reach their potential would have remained unchanged. The pursuit of meaningful work that contributes to the betterment of society is at the heart of my aspirations, whether it’s in product management, entrepreneurship or education.
