This year Renais Spirits, Mr Bug and Siloton, all of which are based in the South West have been named among the top 100. The South West region was found to be most conscious of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, with 10% of firms saying this was their main priority for 2024.

At 52 was Poole-based Renais Spirits, co-founded by Emma Watson, which uses upcycled grape skins for its base spirit, making a new era of carbon-conscious drinking in the UK. Closely followed by Mr Bug at 54, a sustainable protein pet snack business creating insect-based treats for dogs. And at 61 was Siloton, an at-home clinical eye-imaging technology.

In previous years the Startups 100 index has predicted the success of huge names such as Monzo, Deliveroo, and Notonthehighstreet.

Managing editor of Startups.co.uk, Richard Parris, said: “The ingenuity and innovation of the brands featuring in our annual Startups 100 index never ceases to amaze, and this year is no exception. Despite the crises of the past couple of years, we’ve seen some incredible businesses from every corner of the UK in our rankings.

“They may be tackling different challenges to one another, but there’s a shared mood of opportunity and an optimism for the year ahead that’s invigorating to see as we begin 2024.”
