Netflix has released an official trailer for writer-director Wes Anderson‘s short film adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, a rich man who seeks to master the mystical skill of seeing without using his eyes in order to cheat at gambling. In addition to Cumberbatch, Anderson’s film stars Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade. The 39-minute short premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month. It will screen in select theaters starting September 20 ahead of its Netflix release on September 27.

Wes Anderson returns to Roald Dahl’s world with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is based on Dahl’s short story of the same name, which was originally published in 1977. This is not the first time the director has adapted one of Dahl’s stories, however. Anderson previously teamed with frequent collaborator and co-writer Noah Baumbach for a feature-length, stop-motion adaptation of Dahl’s 1970 novel Fantastic Mr. Fox — which hit theaters in 2009 from 20th Century Fox.
What’s more, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar isn’t Anderson’s only Roald Dahl adaptation coming to Netflix. The director helmed three additional short films for the streamer, each based one of Dahl’s short stories. These three short films — The Swan, Poison, and The Ratcatcher — all arrive this month. Notably, Netflix entered a partnership with the Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC) several years ago before acquiring it outright in 2021.
Just last year, Netflix released director Matthew Warchus’ Matilda the Musical, another Roald Dahl adaptation. However, the streamer’s ownership of the RDSC will not affect the release of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonka. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, that film hits theaters this December as a prequel to the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (itself an adaptation of Dahl’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar arrives Wednesday, September 27 on Netflix.
