Johnny Harte, the whiskey veteran behind a slew of brands, is taking cream liqueur back to the farm with his fast-growing Five Farms
According to a long-accepted narrative, Irish cream liqueur was first concocted in London in 1973, when a team of London-based advertising executives mixed Irish whiskey, cream and chocolate powder to create what would become Baileys Irish Cream, one of Ireland’s most valuable brands.
Baileys was invented in response to a marketing brief from Gilbeys of Ireland, a drinks company eager to capitalise on the Irish government’s tax breaks for new export products. But Johnny Harte doesn’t really buy that story. A veteran of the whiskey industry, Harte had a hunch that Irish cream had existed long before the genesis of Baileys.
