HABEEB OLALEKAN OKUNOLA: A Global Citizen With An African Spirit, Unwavering Serial Entrepreneur, Committed to Humanitarian Causes

One of Nigeria’s notable business leaders, driving the nation’s industrial and economic development with indigenous capacity, is Chief Habeeb Olalekan Okunola, OFR, MON, FICA, the Aare Tayese of Iseyinland, Akosin of Yorubaland, and the Chief Executive Officer of TILT Group,

A seasoned entrepreneur, astute, innovative and renowned businessman of international repute, Chief Habeeb Okunola is propelled by the belief that collaboration is innovation and that is why he has fostered value exchange with various entities and made laudable impact in various industries and sectors. Through his strategic foresight, drive, and innovative mindset, TILT Group – a multinational conglomerate headquartered in Nigeria, with diversified investments spanning key business sectors including energy, construction, engineering, agriculture, and technology, has expanded from a predominantly Nigeria-based company to a multinational renowned for redefining Africa’s mix for superior construction, secure energy supply, environmental sustainability practices, and socioeconomic developments.

Under his leadership, TILT Group has partnered with public and private sector organizations to create monumental and critical assets, including the construction of 330 KVA transmission lines, the renovation and remodelling of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, the construction of a state-of-the-art visual arts centre in Ilorin, Kwara State, and the remediation of hydrocarbon-impacted sites in Ogoniland, amongst several monumental turnkey projects.

Inspired by some of the world’s reputable philosophers who believe that the world is guided by insight and reason, Chief Okunola penned down his thoughts on life and the business scene in two of his books titled “The Little Bites of Inspiration” and “The Truly Rich.”

In the book “The Truly Rich,” High Chief Okunola, through objectivity borne out of experience, articulated the hopes and needs of the poor, as well as what the ultra-rich can do to enable and accelerate shared prosperity for the common good of society.

Over the past decade, his philanthropic activities implemented through the vehicle of his non-profit organization, the Habeeb Okunola Foundation, have impacted the lives of no fewer than twenty thousand underserved Nigerians, with a deliberate focus on consolidating the delivery of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria. His charitable deeds and acts of grace for the downtrodden masses are a reflection of his favourite saying, “empowerment is the proof of wealth.”

From Abu Dhabi to the United Kingdom, and from Benin Republic to Singapore, Mr. Okunola’s reputation for his entrepreneurial accomplishments, sustainable development, and commitment to humanitarian causes is not only assured but globally recognized by Forbes, Fortune, the United Nations, amongst others. Apart from being a recipient of numerous honours, he is a first-class High Chief in Nigeria – the Akosin of Yorubaland and the Aare Tayese of Iseyinland. In 2023, he was bestowed with the national honour of the Order of the Federal Republic by the former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari. Beyond the accolades and titles, what truly drives him is the unwavering desire to effect positive change and leave a legacy that transcends personal achievements.

With a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Lagos, he is also an alumnus of Harvard Business School and London Business School who prides himself as a Global Citizen with an African Spirit and a firm advocate of the Sustainable Development Goals. Truly, Chief Habeeb Olalekan Okunola is one of the Most Inspiring and Highly Definitive Top Chief Executives who navigated the Nigerian economy to safely in 2023.

Speaking about the greatest passion that has brought him far in his career, Chief Okunola said “Throughout my career, my greatest passion has been the pursuit of positive impact and transformation. I am deeply driven by the belief that business should serve not only as a vehicle for profit but also as a force for good. Businesses should be used to drive economic growth, improve lives, and create lasting change.

This passion has been the driving force behind my journey as a businessman and philanthropist. It has fuelled and continues to fuel my commitment to making a meaningful and lasting impact on the African business landscape, particularly in Nigeria. I am passionate about redefining Africa’s potential and driving sustainable development that benefits both businesses and communities.

With interest in diverse sectors, TILT Group’s business success cannot be separated from the capacity exhibited by its team of dedicated and committed professionals. Operating as one of the leading industrial conglomerates in Nigeria comes with a great responsibility to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and astuteness.

TILT Group is not just a conglomerate; it is a dynamic organisation that constantly adapts to the changing business landscape. We have a diversified portfolio spanning construction, energy, oil and gas, agriculture, maritime, technology, and media. The level of professionalism we uphold is uncompromising.

We place a strong emphasis on client-focused approaches, innovation, and a commitment to global best practices. In truth, our success is a result of our dedication to excellence, whether it is in construction, energy, agriculture, or technology. We maintain a proactive business approach, prioritise client satisfaction, and ensure our operations align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is this dedication to quality, ethics, and environmental responsibility that sets TILT Group apart and allows us to excel in our operations.”

Expressing his view as a key industrialist and stakeholder in the nation’s economy, he noted that “To fast-track economic development and wealth creation for Nigeria, the government must consider a multi-faceted approach. First and foremost, there needs to be a continued commitment to improving the ease of doing business. This includes streamlining bureaucracy, reducing red tape, and ensuring a business-friendly environment. Investment in critical infrastructure, especially in underserved areas, is crucial for boosting trade and economic activities. Initiatives like developing and expanding railway lines and road networks to rural areas are essential.

Furthermore, government should encourage public-private partnerships to stimulate economic growth. Collaboration between the public and private sectors can drive innovation and investment, leading to job creation and wealth generation. Special attention should be given to sectors with high growth potential, such as technology, renewable energy, and agriculture, which can contribute significantly to the country’s economic development.

Lastly, there must be a strong focus on education and skills development to empower the workforce and foster entrepreneurship. Investing in human capital is fundamental for long-term economic growth. Wealth creation and economic development are intrinsically linked to the quality and skills of the workforce. In essence, the government needs to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, invest in infrastructure, promote partnerships, and prioritize education and skills development.”

Concerning what he considered as the toughest decision ever made and the lesson learned, the quintessential business strategist recalled that “One of the toughest decisions I have ever made was to diversify the operations of TILT Group and venture into multiple sectors beyond our initial construction business. It required a significant shift in our strategy and a leap of faith. The decision came with inherent challenges and uncertainties.

The key lesson I learned from this decision is that adaptability, risk-taking and innovation are essential in a rapidly changing business landscape. Diversification allowed us to not only weather economic fluctuations but also to thrive and expand. It taught me the value of exploring new horizons, adaptability, strategic foresight, and the need to be ready to embrace change. It reaffirmed that success often comes when you are willing to step outside your comfort zone and embrace change, even when it involves tough decisions.

Every business leader needs to be willing to take calculated risks, learn from challenges, and seize opportunities for growth and impact. It is fundamental for businesses and their leadership to remain flexible, maintain a long-term perspective, and have a resilient and innovative mindset. These are just some of the insights I have gathered throughout my career, and I continue to apply these principles to our business operations and our commitment.”

The saying “A golden fish has no hiding place” is a proverb that reflects the idea that genuine excellence cannot be concealed or kept hidden for long. When you excel in your actions or endeavours, your achievements will naturally come to light, and you will receive commendations, recognition, and awards as a result.

Thus, in attestation to his sterling leadership qualities, desire to effect positive change and documented testimonials of his unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes, even globally recognized, the Akosin of Yorubaland has an almost endless list of awards and recognitions both locally and internationally. These include and not limited to the following: Conferment of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by the former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari GCFR; Fellow of the ‘Institute of Credit Administration, by the Institute of Credit Administration, Nigeria; Recipient of the ‘Young Infrastructure Leader Award’ conferred by the African Leadership Organisation, United Kingdom; Conferment  of Member of the Order of the Nigeria (MON) by the former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.

Amb. Tawadrous Michael, Managing Director/CEO, VAVA Group of Companies

TAWADROUS MICHAEL: Quintessential Entrepreneur, Committed To Impactful Businesses That Elevate Society, Changing People’s Lives

Mr. Tawadrous Michael is the Managing Director/CEO, Vava Group of Companies – a conglomerate of Vava Furniture Nigeria Limited, Vava Products LLC USA, and Globe International Pharmaceutical Nigeria.
With an impressive portfolio of successful ventures under his belt, Tawadrous has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a keen entrepreneurial spirit.
Speaking on managing several companies, he said: “The key to success in any business is human resources. If you put the right people in the right places, you will have peace of mind running a business. You must delegate while giving a bit of your time to all in order to move the business forward. The key success of any business has always been Human Resources, having the right people in the right places is the most important thing.

He noted that the major motivation that led to owning a chain of businesses is the natural instinct to change people’s lives. I like to do business that impacts society and changes lives. When you are into businesses, you have to look at the impact it will have on people’s lives, not just the profit.

For example, in the construction arm of the business, I don’t just build, I also do land mass, I like to change the face of the environment around it. I don’t go straight and start building, I look at the environment and reach out to the government to allow me to construct the roads, plant flowers and decorate the areas. God has put me in places and positions to be responsible for many things. I pay attention to the environment when doing business and think about how friendly the environment should be. For instance, I think about how my furniture business is not going to affect my environment negatively, how to run my factories with clean energy, how to be an example to other factories around me and how to inspire people to do the same. Speaking on the amount he has invested in clean energy, he said: “Right now, we are doing a project with 3KM, a company that specialises in clean energy; the company is introducing a solar panel to run the factory on solar energy. Our roofing area will all be covered by solar panels to generate energy to run our factories. The project is approximately consuming around $1.5 million.

On the challenges being faced by businesses in Nigeria, the Egypt-born business savvy said: “We have to agree that we have some challenges. In a big and rich country like Nigeria, we can’t continue with the current level of infrastructure. Infrastructure in Nigeria is a major challenge in doing my business. Our drivers spend two or three days to and fro from Lagos to Abuja, which is just over 500 kilometers. In other countries, truck will deliver and return the same day. Our drivers maneuver and enter villages to avoid terrible portions on the roads. The government needs to invest seriously on road infrastructure.

Another challenge is the amount I spend on diesel. I can’t buy diesel at N1, 300 per liter to run my industries. I rely heavily on diesel. I don’t know how the government can go about it but it’s a major challenge. Another challenge is the difficulties in accessing forex. If a business owner cannot get forex, he will run to the black market. I have to say the truth, the majority of people in the market raised their prices based on the black market price. Having access to Forex should be ensured if we really want to bring inflation down. Lack of one single organised market for raw materials is also a challenge.

This is my recommendation, a major component of our industry, which is the wooden industry is that wooden panels, Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF) and High Density Fibreboard (HDF) panels are not produced in Nigeria.

Nigerians spend millions of dollars importing wooden panels whereas the materials to produce them are available in excess here. We need to start developing factories to produce those panels. We can receive a lot of FOREX that leaves Nigeria through the importation of the panels.

When I started my business, my dream was to have multiple showrooms, after that, I started dreaming of moving into other states. From moving to other states, I considered becoming a manufacturer, from there, I nurtured being the leader of the industry, then considered exporting and making Nigerian products well-known in other countries.

So, at every step, I dream, I achieve my dream. I work harder to achieve that dream and I dream of a bigger one. You have to be very honest and dedicated to the business. I wake up before anybody to start conducting businesses from different continents; I wake up as early as 4. a.m. to start moving vessels and containers from different countries.”

Concerning the company’s CRS, he said: “VAVA has a good record and history in CSR. We gave palliative to people across Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have been helping people. We sent our support when there was a flood challenge in Niger State. Ours is a commitment to impactful businesses that elevate the society and change the lives of the people.

Now, we are looking into empowering widows and single mothers. We want to train people, and then establish businesses for them to earn income.

I am excited about the agenda of the Tinubu administration to take the Nigerian economy to a Trillion Dollar economy over the next three to four years. It is doable. However, a certain fundamental must be the linchpin of this growth. It cannot just be caused by the miracle of the economic and financial wizardry of Dr. Yemi Cardoso, Ben Akabueze, Wale Edun, Dele Alake, and the rest of the Lagos boyz. Abundant energy, in the form of oil and gas and electricity, is sacrosanct. That is why I like the portfolio realignment which creates a Minister for Gas whom I hope will align closely with the Minister for Power. America the world’s largest economy only has 4.3% of the world population but consumes 25% of world oil production. If there is a cease in global oil supply today America will go into recession immediately. That is how clearly I can make the case for the extremely high correlation between energy and growth.

Now, this brings me to a different but related topic – Energy Transition. Though Nigeria may have signed the UN mandate on climate goals, it will be foolhardy for us to champion this course or even allow it to distract us. In my opinion, Energy Transition will be the longest and possibly the most inequitable transition of any kind in history. I have no problem with the idea itself, but its implementation is burdened with irrational activism by vested interests. Except I’m missing something, I don’t really see how the world energy is in a transition yet. Most business transitions occur as a result of market disruption. Of the roughly 160,000 TWh of energy consumed globally, Fossil fuel still accounts for over 85%, Nuclear energy is less than 7%, Renewable, though growing, remains expensive and has been stuck in the single digit for over a decade. So, is the world going to transition without disruption? To put it differently, can you replace 90% with 10%?”

By consolidating these vital departments, the company enhances communication, seamless exchange of ideas, fosters synergy and cross-functional collaboration, and most importantly, streamlines decision-making processes, which will ultimately improve operational efficiency.

Concerning what is needed to fast-track economic development and wealth creation for Nigeria, he advised that “Government at all levels to focus on investing in critical infrastructure, such as reliable utilities (electricity, water supply and transportation networks) thereby reducing the cost of running business in the Hospitality Industry. This would definitely catalyze growth and attract both local and foreign investments, ultimately fostering a thriving economic ecosystem. Secondly, implementing a favorable tax incentive scheme (in form of tax breaks and waivers especially for start-ups in the industry would go along way in ensuring that the percentages of companies that fail is not significant.”

In recognition of Bolton White Group’s leadership in the Sector, the Group indefatigable and highly resourceful point man noted that “Johnwood Hotel, a part of Bolton White Group, received three esteemed awards at the recent World Luxury Hotel Awards in Athens, Greece. These accolades include Luxury New Hotel in Africa (Continent Winner), New Luxury Hotel (Nigeria Winner), and Luxury City Hotel (Nigeria Winner), achieved within just 15 years of operation. This success underscores our team’s hard work and commitment to providing unmatched luxury and hospitality experience.

Furthermore, to foster the emergence of more award-winning Chief Executive Officers to drive the growth of the nation’s economy, my advice is for business executives to focus on the little things. Paying attention to the seemingly small details can pave the way for significant achievements, eventually leading to accolades and recognition. Success often lies in the careful cultivation of these everyday aspects of business management.”

On the toughest decision he ever made and the lesson learnt, he recalled that “As Bolton White Group’s Executive Director, the task of navigating through the challenging times of the COVID-19 lockdown, was a case in point. It was really challenging time for Bolton White Group. At the face of economic stagnation, we had to make the difficult choice of laying off a significant number of our staff. It was heart-wrenching, but it taught me the importance of adaptability, empathy, and the resilience of our team. We focused on supporting those affected while strategically reshaping the organization to ensure a stronger and more sustainable future.”

The world will always remember the year 1970. In specific terms, the year stands out as momentous for obvious reason – it was the year the Nigerian Civil War ended. It was in the euphoria of this historic event, which effectively marked the return of peace to Nigeria that Abubakar Mohammed, the first male child of his parents, the late Alhaji Abubakar Nasidi Bambado, the 2nd Sarkin Fulani of Lagos and his amiable wife, Hajia Halima Bambado, arrived the world on the 15th day of April 1970. Ronke Adeagbo Founder, CEO IA-Foundation

IBIRONKE ADEAGBO: Quintessential Amazon, Resourceful Entrepreneur, Adding Value to Lives through IA-Foundation

Her reputation amongst the brightest stars of her generation is a result of her drive to succeed at difficult tasks, her determination to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, her astuteness, and her commitment to hard work. Her enthusiasm to take on challenging task and make a success out of it, diligence, adherence to high standards and professional ethics, astuteness and hard work are the attributes that have placed her name among the shinning lights in her generation.

A woman of substance, whose Foundation has helped to connect the dreams of out-of-school children back to school in Nigeria. Ibironke Adeagbo, Founder, IA-Foundation is a thoroughbred professional and a chartered accountant. She was a Director of the British Safety Council and a Trustee/Director of many charities in the UK.

In addition, Ibironke has worked as Assistant Principal/Director of Corpora

te services in the education sector in the UK. According to her, “Growing up in the family as the only girl, my parents were quite strict with me. My father, an Engineer and my mother a social worker are both religious, so they imbibed me with the importance of being academically inclined and religious.
So, this instilled in me, honesty, hard-work, integrity, altruism, compassion and academic discipline, which made me excel in my education and enabled me achieve the little successes I have achieved in my career and in life. I am very principled, disciplined, religious and would not compromise my integrity for anything. These qualities have made me excel as a chartered accountant both in Nigeria and in the UK.”.

On what led to the establishment of IA Foundation and the impact on the life of the beneficiaries, Ibironke noted that “In the UK, I worked in the education sector as Director of Corporate services and it was my responsibility to ensure we get maximum funding from the government by ensuring the school is fully subscribed. So, to achieve this, we had to recruit as much students as possible. By default, we helped the UK government achieve its zero tolerance for out of school children in the UK. But when I came to my country, Nigeria, I see children all over the street hawking, when they are meant to be in school.

When I carried out my research, I realised the number was a staggering 20.2m children out of school in Nigeria. It became a moral dilemma for me to do something about it. So, in 2019, I decided to set up the Ibironke Adeagbo Foundation (IA-Foundation) to pick up out of school children from the streets and put them in school, pay their fees, uniforms, bags, shoes, books, meals and other ancillary costs. So far, we have picked up 105 children, distributed over 4000 e- learning devices, 9000 learning materials and installed education infrastructure, such as boreholes in places like Makoko. We have also held a Schools Safety and Security Summit and an Out of School Children Summit. We also carry out advocacy to encourage the government to prioritise education by increasing the budget.”

In reviving the Nigerian educational sector, she opined that money needs to be pumped into the education sector. “The education budget should be a double-digit percentage, improve the educational infrastructure in school, especially security, buildings, IT and teachers’ salary and development.” Ibironke added that this can be done by deducting state government UBEC counterpart share of the funding of education before the funds are distributed to the states.

She further advised that as a pre-requisite for public office, parents vying for public office must send their children to school in Nigeria. “Government should empower and equip the inspectorate department, introduce widening participation and social welfare initiatives that will ensure children from deprived backgrounds are protected from paying for anything to access education”, she advised.

On the future projection and portfolio expansion of AI-Foundation, the quintessential Amazon said “Our values are integrity, transparency and inclusivity and we are intentional about it, our governance and regulation are very robust. The Foundation is regulated by two regulators in the UK (Charity Commission and Companies house) and two regulators in Nigeria (CAC and Ministry of Education), we have a very high profile and brilliant board, sub-committees, Patron, Ambassadors and volunteers.”

As a reputable chartered accountant, she further said that both in Nigeria and the UK, AI-foundation accounts get audited annually, we are compassionate in carrying out our passion and we plan to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria first before spreading out into Africa.
