Hulu has announced the release date for the upcoming third season of the acclaimed period comedy-drama The Great. The Elle Fanning-led series will officially make its return on May 12 with 10 new episodes, after over a year since it wrapped up its second installment.
The Great Season 3 date announcement also came with the release of the first official photo from the upcoming series. It features Catherine and Peter seemingly working on fixing their marriage after a season of constantly trying to kill each other.
The Great is a satirical, comedic drama centered around the rise of Catherine the Great through 18th Century Russia from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. It is led by Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, who earned Golden Globe nominations for their leading performances in the second season. The series also stars Phoebe Fox as Marial, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee as Grigor, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, and Sacha Dhawan.
“Season 3 sees Catherine and Peter attempt to make their marriage work after some seemingly insurmountable problems,” reads the synopsis. “Peter witnessed his own attempted murder at Catherine’s hands and she also imprisoned all of his friends. On top of this, Peter is at a loose end playing First Husband to Catherine’s reign, so he busies himself with fathering, hunting, and salty culinary ventures. But they’re not enough to keep him contented as visions of his late father, get in his head about his failures as Peter the Great’s son. Catherine the Great starts making a name for herself beyond her borders and inspired by a visit from the US ambassador, sets up a conference where peasants, nobles, and merchants can all give their input on developing a new Russia. She learns that even the best political leaders sometimes need to make compromises in order to progress.”
The Great is written and executive produced by Tony McNamara (The Favourite) with Matt Shakman (Game Of Thrones) serving as the director. Fanning and Marian Macgowan are also serving as executive producers.
