Hi all. I’m excited to announce some changes to our newsroom leadership structure which will help us be even more indispensable to sports fans in the years to come.
In its short, dynamic history, The Athletic has always matched the capabilities of its unparalleled talent to its ambitions, enabling the company to rapidly expand and embrace new opportunities. We are again in a moment of great ambition as we build on our considerable success in significant ways.
We want to: 1) Be the first place sports fans go every day to get their news and to read our distinctive, in-the-moment stories off the news; 2) Build addictive products that entice readers and advertisers alike; 3) Attract and cultivate the development of the best sports journalists, ensuring their success and ongoing opportunities as they build their careers here; 4) Have our journalism read, listened to and watched by as many people as possible, across all media platforms; 5) Expand our international presence; and 6) Continue to deliver revelatory narrative, investigative journalism.
These priorities represent who we are and our vision for the future; now, an editorial director reporting to me will be in charge of achieving each. Importantly, all editorial operations will now have a home in the newsroom, though reporting lines for many teams will change only slightly.
The Athletic’s updated top-level leadership now includes the following new roles:
Editorial Director – Culture, Opinion and Talent Development: Lisa Wilson
Editorial Director – News: TBA
Deputy Editorial Director – News: TBA
Editorial Director – Audience: Claudio Cabrera
Editorial Director – Design and Visuals: Amy Cavenaile
Head of Creative Development: Craig Custance
Director of Creative Development: Chris Sprow
Editorial Director – Investigations, Enterprise and Standards: Paul Fichtenbaum
Editor-At-Large: Leon Carter
Alex Kay-Jelski remains Editor-in-Chief of The Athletic in the United Kingdom and Europe and sits alongside this group to advance our International ambitions.
We’ve set up some time for us to come together shortly today as a global team, where I’m looking forward to sharing more perspective on this with you all. In the meantime, I’ve outlined some additional details about each new role below. As we put these leadership updates into practice, please feel free to reach out with any questions or if you’d just like to talk. Thank you.
