In pursuit of fostering and inspiring future accountants, Taylor’s concluded its Taylor’s International Accounting Day Inter-school Competition 2023 last Saturday at Taylor’s Lakeside Campus. Team GG Bond from SMK Tinggi Batu Pahat clinched the title of ‘Champion’, by showcasing their accounting knowledge and creative prowess as they tackled the case study surrounding Malaysia’s tourism industry during the Grand Finals.
In celebration of International Accounting Day, the Inter-school Competition co-organised by Taylor’s College School of Professional Studies and Taylor’s Business School serves as an inclusive and empowering platform for students to showcase their proficiency in accounting, critical thinking skills, and teamwork while navigating real-world business scenarios. The challenge fostered an environment of friendly competition and encouraged a spirit of continuous learning, collaboration, and professional growth among aspiring accountants.
“With the compelling insight from Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) that there are presently 38,500 registered accountants serving Malaysia’s population as of June 2023 , there is a pressing need for more accounting professionals in the country to reach the target of 60,000 accountancy professionals by 2030 set by the government. This is why Taylor’s is supporting this goal by organising this inter-school competition and offering scholarships for students to nurture and develop future accounting professionals that are crucial for the economy,” said Jason Lo, Head of School of Professional Studies, Taylor’s College.
A total of 162 teams from 46 institutions hailed from all over Malaysia took part in the Inter-school Competition. The teams come from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK), Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SMJK (C)), Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP), Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM), International Schools, Private Schools and Chinese Independent Schools.
Starting with the preliminary round from 12 to 14 August 2023, all participants completed an online 50 multiple-choice questions within an hour, where the top 20 groups with the highest average score will move on to the semi-finals. The semi-finalists then received a case study ahead of time, where they would need to prepare their solutions and present them on the day of. The finals saw 5 teams competing for the title ‘Champion’ and the prize money of RM5,000.
Tan Sze Yung, leader of Team GG Bond from SMK Tinggi Batu Pahat was enthusiastic and celebrated when his team was announced the winner, as it is the second consecutive year the school has clinched the title. “We were encouraged by our accounting teacher to enter the competition, and her guidance throughout this competition was very valuable to us. The Inter-school competition provided me with an invaluable experience as I had the privilege of honing my critical thinking and presentation skills through the case studies. These skills will propel me forward when faced with business challenges in the future,” he said.
