San Diego has long been Tampa’s “largest unserved nonstop market,” according to Tampa International Airport CEO Joe Lopano.
Not anymore.
Alaska Airlines began a new nonstop route between Tampa and San Diego on Thursday, the airline announced.
It runs daily, with flights departing San Diego in the morning and departing Tampa in the afternoon to cater to business travelers. Tampa International announced the new service in January.
Tampa hasn’t had a flight to the San Diego International Airport since September 2021.
Since then, demand for the southern California city has really grown. About 154 passengers travel each way between Tampa and San Diego daily, according to airport officials. Nonstop flights could save regular travelers several hours in commuting time.
“Until now, San Diego has been TPA’s largest unserved nonstop market, and the ability to give our travelers a daily option to reach this destination without having to make a connection is invaluable,” Lopano said in a statement.
