SWISS to sell only Green Fares between Zurich and Geneva

Lufthansa Group airline SWISS will only sell ‘Green Fares’ on its services between Zurich and Geneva from today.

The fares, piloted by the airline group last year, include a price component for offsetting the carbon emissions associated with the passenger’s flight.

Such fares have been available on the carrier’s European network since the start of the year, with 20 per cent of emissions offset via purchases of sustainable aviation fuel and 80 per cent via ‘quality’ climate protection projects.

The now obligatory Green Fares apply only to point-to-point travel between the cities and not to connecting flights.

Also starting today, passengers flying on services between Zurich and Geneva will be able to purchase an enhanced Green Fare option (shown below highlighted in red) which offsets 50 per cent of the associated emissions via SAF and 50 per cent via climate protection projects.

“We bear a great responsibility towards society and the environment,” says SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx. “We aim to make SWISS entirely net-carbon-neutral by 2050. And we need to take a wide range of actions to achieve this ambitious objective. Adopting Green Fares for all our Swiss domestic flights is a key element and further step in this strategy. And we will continue to steadily expand our various products and offers for more sustainable air travel.”

In May, the
Lufthansa Group reported that more than 200,000 passengers purchased Green Fares in the first 100 days of them being made available across
its European network.

The figure equated to around three per cent of passengers who were able
to book the fare type which are understood to remain available only via the
websites and NDC platforms of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels
Airlines, SWISS, Eurowings and Air Dolomiti.

BTN Europe has contacted Swiss for further information.

All SWISS fares now include an offset component while a new, enhanced option is shown in red. A similar 'enhanced' Economy Green fare is available in business class (Fares shown are for illustrative purposes only and show the outbound leg of a trip between Zurich and Geneva on 12-13 Sep in economy)
