The Swedish government has confirmed it will support the country’s bid for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Confirmed:

  • Government backs bid from the Swedish Olympic Committee, the Swedish Paralympic Committee, and the National Sports Federation of Sweden
  • Bid on course to receive necessary support and financial guarantees
  • Government set to examine conditions for providing the necessary state assurances to conduct the Winter Games
  • Estimated that between 150,000 and 175,000 tourists would visit Sweden for the event
  • Government-commissioned studies also project that more than SEK1 billion (US$92 million) could be generated

Context:

Sweden’s Olympic and Paralympic committees announced in February that they would conduct a feasibility study on hosting the 2030 Winter Games, having failed to land the 2026 event. The resulting study includes plans to hold Winter Olympics ice sports and ceremonies in the Stockholm region, Nordic sports in Falun, snow sports in Åre and Östersund, and sliding sports in Sigulda, Latvia.

The country is facing competition from France, Switzerland and Salt Lake City in the US this time round. The Japanese city of Sapporo withdrew from the bidding process last month.

Comment:

“The government notes the great interest shown by Swedish businesses in a Winter Games in Sweden,” the Swedish government said in a statement. “A prerequisite for the government’s support for a Swedish Olympic bid is that the business community contributes to the sponsorship revenues calculated in the Games budget.”

Coming next:

Sweden will now test conditions for providing guarantees for the Games, including safety checks, financial guarantees, as well as cooperation between authorities and organisers.
