Supporting impact and social enterprise in Brisbane

[ad_1]

Brisbane City Council is committed to the advancement of impact and social enterprises. The initiatives below were delivered in addition to existing business initiatives, which are all part of building Australia’s most business-friendly city.

Social Enterprise World Forum 2022

Council proudly supported White Box Enterprises to deliver the Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF) 2022. This global event travels each year to a different city, bringing together leaders in social enterprise, policy makers, community leaders, philanthropists, investors, and academics to help progress the global transition of a new impact economy.

Coming to Australia for the second time, the 2022 SEWF took place on 28-29 September at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event focused on themes including Indigenous social enterprise, climate solutions, excellence and failure, and policy and systems. With a series of keynotes, Q&A panel sessions, in-person and online networking and masterclasses, the SEWF championed the ability for social enterprises to lead inclusive and sustainable economic development.

This was an opportunity to be part of the global movement creating meaningful impact for social and economic change.

Bursary packages

In addition to supporting White Box Enterprises to deliver the SEWF, Council fully subsidised a number of Brisbane-based social enterprises to attend the SEWF. These businesses were able to participate and network with like minded business owners and gained valuable insight into global learnings and trends within the sector.

Stronger Social Enterprises: Business Coaching

Council procured the services of Prominence Consulting who delivered tailored one on one business coaching from March 2022 to June 2022 to 14 social enterprises. The business coaching provided valuable insight and enabled local social enterprises to build stronger business models to ensure longevity and success of businesses.

Hear from past participants

“Social enterprises have unique processes and systems, and with the help of a business coach we were able to increase productivity across the business and maximise the social impact we make.”

Tim Sprey, Jigsaw Australia

“Having a business coach come in was helpful. The workshop itself is going really well but the business coach was an impetus to give ourselves a kick start and develop organisational strategies to assist the daily business operations.”

Monique Lowndes, eWaste Connection

“We have developed a stronger business model and strategic plan due to the insights and tailored guidance of our coach. Working with our business coach has enabled our team to articulate our strengths, identify gaps in knowledge and build a solid framework for future growth. We are now poised to respond to larger opportunities with more confidence and competence.”

Kat Dekker, Give Industries

Additionally, Council funded a social enterprise accelerator program from 2016-2020, helping 51 social enterprises develop and advance their businesses.

Brisbane Social Enterprise Hub

The Brisbane Social Enterprise Hub, the city’s first dedicated CBD office space for the sector that channels opportunities to enhance social or environmental wellbeing, is located at the Brisbane Business Hub.

The Queensland Social Enterprise Council (QSEC) occupies the space along with numerous social enterprises benefiting from working alongside like-minded entrepreneurs. QSEC is recognised for its leadership in the development of the social enterprise sector in Brisbane and Queensland and is also driving the need for a national strategy.
