Sudbury letter: Lack of business address numbers worth ‘addressing’

[ad_1]

I would like to draw attention to the fact that many Sudbury businesses, perhaps more than half, do not display a number on their buildings or property.

I base this conclusion on what I found when I began to notice how few businesses on Lasalle, The Kingsway and Regent Street south between Walford and the Four corners do not display an address.

I thought this to be odd. I checked with the city and was told that there is a bylaw requiring all businesses to display a number on their buildings or property.

I was also told by the person I spoke with that the bylaw is not enforced. Why?

It seems obvious to me that displaying a number on one’s place of business has huge benefits, such as making it easier to locate, not only for customers but fire, ambulance, taxi, delivery and postal services.

I have spoken with the owners and managers at several of these locations and found to my surprise that few seem to be concerned about this in any way. Some have told me that “everybody knows where we are.” But I can imagine there are people who may be new in town or visiting and may not know the location.

And, again, I would focus attention on the safety aspect of this.

In fact, on two separate occasions while inquiring politely

about the lack of an address, I was told sternly to mind my own business or the police would be called.

As for myself, I know that if I owned a business, I would want to be as easy to find as possible. I feel strongly that this is an issue worth “addressing.”
