Study shows Utahns most interested in starting a small business in 2024

In a recent study conducted by The Small Business Blog, Utah has emerged as the frontrunner in the United States for individuals looking to embark on new business ventures in the coming year. The analysis, which delved into search data from Google Keyword Planner for over 100 terms related to “side hustle” and “small business,” provided valuable insights into entrepreneurial aspirations across the country.

Utah claimed the top spot with an average of 365 monthly searches per 100,000 residents expressing an interest in starting a new business in 2024. Idaho ranked 19th with 287 searches per 100,000 residents. The most frequently searched terms in Utah included “side hustle” and “side hustle ideas,” indicating both an entrepreneurial spirit and a concern among its residents to make ends meet due to rising inflation.

Following closely behind Utah, Arizona secured the second position with 357 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, indicating a robust desire for side hustles and small business ventures. Key search terms in Arizona included “side hustle,” “small business owner,” and “side hustles from home.”

Colorado secured the third spot with 351 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Popular search terms in Colorado encompassed “small businesses,” “how to start a small business,” and “easy side hustle.” The state boasts a total of 691,230 registered small businesses.

New York, known for its bustling business landscape, claimed the fourth position with 330 average monthly searches per 100,000 individuals. Commonly searched terms in the state also included “side hustle,” “side gig,” and “startup business.” As of 2023, New York boasted a staggering 2.2 million small to medium enterprises.

Nevada rounded out the top five with an average of 318 monthly searches per 100,000 people. Noteworthy search terms in Nevada included “small business owner,” “how to start a small business,” “side hustles that make money,” and “making money from home.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Mississippi emerged as the state with the least interest in side jobs, with only 202 searches per 100,000 people.

“The cost of living across America has risen drastically, and it has become necessary for many households to seek additional sources of income, whether this be in the form of a side hustle or a fully-fledged small business,” a spokesperson for The Small Business Blog noted. “In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report, there has been an 8.29% increase since 2021 of Americans having more than one job.

“With this in mind, the data provides an interesting insight into the disparities across America for interest in starting a new business venture, with Utah having nearly double the interest compared to Mississippi.”

The study’s methodology involved the analysis of data from Google Keyword Planner for 100 terms related to “side hustle” and “small business.” Average monthly searches were calculated for each of these 100 terms and then totaled for each U.S. state. To account for differences in population size between states, the total number of searches was calculated as a proportion of 100,000 residents.
