Story of transfer deadline day for Owls, Blades and Terriers

[ad_1]

Sheffield United brought the curtain down on their transfer window with the capture of James McAtee on a season-long loan. The Man City midfielder returned for a second spell after completing a deal to become the 10th signing of the summer for Paul Heckingbottom’s men.

The Owls were also active, with Xisco Muñoz bringing in two new faces to help bolster his side. John Buckley arrived from Blackburn on a season-loan, while Jeff Hendrick also arrived on loan from Newcastle United, taking Owls’ business to 12.

It was the complete opposite for Huddersfield Town, whose transfer window closed quietly. Given the difficult start to the season and Warnock’s parting shot at the owner, it’s a deadline day that did little to lighten the mood at the St John’s Stadium.

Here is how transfer deadline day unfolded.

Final thoughts on Huddersfield Town’s summer business

Listening back to it again, the rest of his press conference preceding that parting shot was actually pretty positive overall, with Warnock saying that it was not all doom and gloom, and that Danny Ward will start firing sooner or later – possibly helped by better service from the summer’s marquee signing, Ben Wiles, and competition from loanee Delano Burgzorg and youngsters Kian Harratt and Kyle Hudlin.

… But it’s not great either, obviously, and the overall atmosphere within the club at 11pm on Friday will be more glum than upbeat. Some fans will be approaching meltdown. Even the devil’s greatest advocate would find it difficult to argue too hard with them, at this stage at least: Town are yet to win a game this season and are the lowest-scoring team in the division – and one of the two they have scored was an own goal.

Done deal

Wednesday confirm signing number 11

Transfer window closed

We’re past 11pm. Stay tuned for more on Sheffield Wednesday from Ricky Charlesworth, but I’m not expecting anything from Huddersfield Town, nor is Nathan Hemmingham expecting anything else from Sheffield United, I don’t believe.

Buckley incoming

Elliott Jackson, Blackburn reporter for our sister title Lancs Live, reporting that Buckley due imminently. Be a season-long loan arrangement with a January recall..

Still waiting

Awaiting confirmation to hear if the Owls have beaten the deadline….

Half an hour left

We’re expecting at least one announcement from Hillsborough before 11pm….

Louie Marsh joins Doncaster

Young Blades striker Louie Marsh has joined Doncaster Rovers on loan after penning a new contract with the club.

The striker, who has been in sensational form for the under-21s, has put pen to paper on a three-year deal before heading out for an important season with the League Two club as part of his development.

Owls state of play

Here’s how it is looking at Wednesday as we enter the final couple of hours.

In terms of arrivals Jeff Hendrick looks to be on track and it seems only a matter of time before his move from Newcastle, almost certainly a loan, is ratified.

John Buckley could also arrive from Blackburn after a u-turn. Again, it’ll be a loan arrangement.

Outgoings-wise, Marvin Johnson is interesting Derby but there’s a disagreement over a loan fee so that might not go ahead.

Will Vaulks is staying put despite interest from teams in the Championship and League One.

Remember, the deadline is 11pm.

Buckley back on?

It’s been claimed a deal for Blackburn’s John Buckley, on loan, could be revived. Just over two hours left of the window…

Pipa to West Brom?

The former Huddersfield Town right-back is reportedly in advanced talks over a third spell working for Carlos Corberan at West Bromwich Albion, at least according to the Daily Mail. The pair were together at Town and at Olympiacos. He wouldn’t be able to face Town tomorrow of course, the midday cut-off having long since passed by now.

Still no news from the John Smith’s Stadium about any further deals.

Sheffield United transfer window verdict is in

United’s business in this window is done but for any late youth loans… so what’s the verdict?

Johnson update

The Telegraph claim Derby and the Owls are in discussions over a loan move for Marvin Johnson. Makes sense given him being frozen out under Xisco Munoz.

Heckingbottom issues transfer update

That’s it for United’s business today, the hope is now that no one comes in for any players with late bids..

Marvin Johnson

Xisco Munoz has made it clear that the Wednesday midfielder is available for transfer. He has not been included in the matchday squad this season.

As things stand, he will be staying put unless there is a late development.

Forest set to land Blades target

Nottingham Forest are closing in on Divock Origi.

The AC Milan striker was linked with interest from Sheffield United earlier this month but it’s now being reported that the former Liverpool man is heading to the City Ground on loan with an option to buy.

It is all so quiet

There’s little to report right now for any of our clubs. Wednesday are hoping to conclude a deal for Jeff Hendrick, but there might not be anymore incomings for Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town.

But this is deadline day so who knows what might happen later on…

More Championship business

Middlesbrough have signed left-back Alex Bangura. The Sierra Leone international becomes the club’s 12th signing of the summer transfer window. He has penned a four-year deal.

Could a striker be on the way out at Bramall Lane

According to Radio Sheffield, Louie Marsh is a target for a loan move to Doncaster.

Heckingbottom was unsure whether to let the youngster leave but now looks to have made a decision.

Some more background on Hendrick

Sheffield Wednesday are working on a deal to sign Newcastle United midfielder Jeff Hendrick. It has been claimed that the Republic of Ireland international has travelled to South Yorkshire today ahead of a potential loan move.

Yorkshire Live caught up with Aaron Stokes, the Newcastle United editor for Chronicle Live, to get the lowdown on Hendrick.

‘Not all doom and gloom’ for Huddersfield Town

You may (just may) have seen Neil Warnock had his frustrations yesterday – but even he had acknowledged earlier in his press conference that it wasn’t all ‘doom and gloom’ even if that striker signing does indeed fail to materialise.

You can find what the Town manager had to say here, including Town’s plan B options.

McAtee’s squad number

The youngster once again has been given the number 28 for this season, his squad number from the last campaign

Town loan move

Not a major one, but Terriers B-team goalkeeper Michael Acquah has gone on loan to Farsley Celtic.

Still all quiet on the Huddersfield Town front – not so much as a viable transfer link to hang your hats on so far. Just over seven hours to go, so still some time to get something done.

Look who’s back!

Sheffield United have completed the season-long loan deal for James McAtee and he says the ’emotional connection’ he has with the club is one of the key reasons for his return

Che Adams

The former Blades forward’s proposed loan move to Wolves is currently off. The Scotland international was expected to pen a new deal with Southampton before completing a temporary switch to Molineux, but Saints have reportedly now decided against the move.

Championship transfer

Blackburn have signed forward Semir Telalovic from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old has agreed a three-year deal at Ewood Park, with the option of an additional 12 months.

Hendrick update

According to the Telegraph Newcastle’s Jeff Hendrick is at Wednesday ahead of “a potential move”.

Another blow

Wednesday were tentatively linked with Bournemouth’s Jamal Lowe – but he’s now set to re-join ex-club Swansea on loan….

Hayden update

Reports suggest the move is not off – yet – but that it has hit a snag. It could be that Wednesday shift targets and look elsewhere. John Buckley, of Blackburn, could be a potential alternative…

United rivals strengthen

United’s rivals Nottingham Forest have added left-back Nuno Tavares to their ranks.

The Portuguese defender has joined on a season-long loan with an option to buy

Away from deadline day

Huddersfield Town owner Kevin Nagle has acknowledged the messages sent his way on social media after manager Neil Warnock voiced his frustration at missing out on several transfer targets this summer.

United currently pushing for McAtee and Heckingbottom would also like another forward.

Hayden twist?

Standard Liege are making a late bid to sign the Newcastle midfielder, according to the Daily Telegraph.

This could scupper the Owls’ attempts to bring him in.

One to keep an eye on.

Blades ‘target’ joins Chelsea

Blades-linked Cole Palmer has joined Chelsea on a seven-year contract. The PA news agency understands Chelsea will pay an initial £40million for the 21-year-old with an additional £2.5m in possible add-ons.

Palmer said: “I’m excited to get started and it feels great to sign.

“I’ve joined Chelsea because the project here sounds good and because of the platform I will have to try to showcase my talents. It is a young and hungry squad and, hopefully, we can do something special here.”

United still pushing on McAtee

Yorkshire Live understands the deal to sign McAtee is not straightforward and there is still work to be done on it.

Heckingbottom was hoping to have him available to face Everton tomorrow but it’s proving complicated. Still work to be done on it but plenty of time before the deadline tonight

McAtee has missed the deadline

United were hoping to make the 12 noon deadline for McAtee, but Yorkshire Live understands the deal has not been completed yet and is still being worked on

Midday musings

All is very quiet at Hillsborough right now as we hit midday. But expect that to change as the day goes on.

Wednesday still working on a deal for Isaac Hayden and would like at least one further arrival. Still no concrete movement regards outgoings.

Again, this could change.

Transfer window distraction

Terriers boss Neil Warnock suspects that the closure of the transfer window at 11pm on Friday evening will be of great benefit to goalkeeper Lee Nicholls after his unusually error-strewn start to the season.

Voted player of the year for Huddersfield Townand Championship goalkeeper of the year in 2021/22, Nicholls has made more errors leading to goals in four games this season than he had in the previous two years at the John Smith’s Stadium, most recently gifting Norwich City the opening goal on Saturday afternoon by unnecessarily punting a clearance straight at the onrushing Josh Sargent.

A fresh start for Doyle

Tommy Doyle’s season on loan at Sheffield United last season convinced Wolves to make him a transfer target for this season. The 21-year-old has made the switch to Moilineux on a loan, with reports claiming there is an option to turn it into a permanent deal at the end. More here.

Hayden switch

Isaac Hayden appears to have moved a step closer to joining Sheffield Wednesday. The Newcastle United midfielder is firmly out of favour on Tyneside.

He has not made a single appearance for the Magpies since December 2021. Last season he was sent out on loan to Norwich City and a similar deal looks likely now with the Owls poised to bring him in on a season-long arrangement. It has been reported that Hayden is undergoing a medical and that provided that goes well he will become the 11th summer signing.

Done deal

Manchester City youngster Tommy Doyle has joined Wolves on a season long loan. The midfielder starred on loan at Sheffield United last season, helping the club secure promotion to the top flight.

He was heavily linked with a return to Bramall Lane this summer.

John Buckley interest

Our colleagues at Lancs Live confirm the Blackburn Rovers stance on John Buckley, who has been linked with a move to Wednesday.

Lancs Live understands Sheffield Wednesday have made contact about a possible loan deal. The midfielder hasn’t been included in Rovers’ matchday squad to face Plymouth Argyle. He didn’t travel down with the squad on Thursday.

Norwich in for reported Blades target

Talksport claim Norwich City are eyeing a move for Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore.

The Canaries are in the market for a striker today and have been credited with interest in Moore, who was linked with the Blades earlier in the week

The actual state of play at Huddersfield

All joking aside, Town are still trying to get business done. They want to get that extra striker in and are sure to be pulling out all the stops to try and find someone suitable.

Neil Warnock was not optimistic that was going to happen, though, with his earlier efforts all falling short for one reason or another…but even he could not rule out the possibility that some unexpected opportunity might emerge.

As far as outs are concerned, there’s not a lot of fat left on the squad, but Scott High looks likely to go out on loan to Ross County.
