London Stansted exceeded 2019 monthly passenger traffic for the first time in July since the start of the pandemic – the first major UK airport to achieve this milestone.
The airport, which is part of Manchester Airports Group, catered for 2.8 million passengers last month – two per cent higher than in July 2019.
The group, which also owns Manchester and East Midlands airports in the UK, handled 6.3 million passengers in July across the three airports, which was three per cent below pre-Covid figures.
“London Stansted serves more European destinations than any other airport in the UK, offering passengers the choice they look for when booking their summer breaks, business trips or to visit friends and family. It serves as important gateway for visitors to the capital,” said MAG in a statement.
Manchester airport’s traffic in July reached 2.9 million, which was 94 per cent of July 2019 levels, while East Midlands served just under 500,000 passengers during the month, still 13 per cent below pre-Covid figures.
MAG’s rolling 12-month traffic total was also up to more than 57 million passengers, which was an increase of 51 per cent on the previous year.
