Also part of the #ChooseCollege campaign, this includes a day of collecting samples at the Environmental Management taster day in Edinburgh, getting hands-on with animals at Elmwood’s Animal Care taster day or learning about garden design and landscape construction at Oatridge’s Horticulture taster day. The Aberdeen taster event is part of the Climate Week North East campaign.
As well as this, the SRUC Enterprise Academy is launching the organisation’s first Sustainable Start-up School next month.
The programme will formally open with an in-person event in Edinburgh on Wednesday, April 19 and will feature three award-winning entrepreneurs, Lauren Leisk, Tommy Dale and Jackie Brierton MBE. who will each share their personal start-up journeys.
Lauren’s company Fodilicious – which she started as a student – provides vegan, allergen-free snacks and drinks for those experiencing IBS and has picked up several awards along the way from Food Matters Live (Future Brand 2019), Scottish EDGE and many more.
Tommy, a graduate of SRUC, likewise transformed a college project processing compost into a successful business in Forth Resource Management which now proudly operates ten sites across Scotland serving 12 local authorities and hundreds of organisations, It has been recognised for its efforts in tackling the climate crisis as well as supporting communities.
Jackie is the Chief Executive of GrowBiz, an organisation that supports rural businesses across Scotland, and is also one of SRUC’s two Entrepreneurs-in-Residence. She was awarded an MBE for services to enterprise and was inducted into the Saltire Society’s ‘Outstanding Women of Scotland’ in 2019.
Throughout launch day students will have the opportunity to work on their business ideas and learn more about the range of services provided by two of Scotland’s leading business support organisations, Business Gateway and Firstport (social enterprises).
Finally, SRUC’s partner Morton Fraser will help students navigate the typical legal matters faced by those embarking on a new venture. Following launch day, a series of enterprise webinars will be run by the Enterprise Academy to support students to continue to develop themselves and their ideas, and enhance their personal and professional development.

Sustainable Enterprise manager, Matthew Gardiner, said: “We’re especially excited by the potential of this new programme to help inspire and nurture a new generation of entrepreneurs here at Scotland’s Rural College. The learnings and connections made across these sessions will no doubt prove invaluable to all attendees as they progress their ideas.”
