FLINT, MI — The Flint Farmers’ Market honored Small Business Saturday with the Holiday Craft Market which featured dozens of artisans with handmade products.

Vendors ranged from candle and jewelry makers to knitters and more.

Talia Dunn and her daughter Dayani Dunn, both of Flint, sold candles near the back of the market’s Ramsdell Room at the free admission event hosted by Flint Handmade.

Dunn’s business, named Flintstone Candle, started three years ago as a side hustle during the pandemic.

“I turned my hobby into a business,” Talia Dunn said. “I enjoy making candles, so I started selling them with my daughters.”

Dunn enjoys showing her daughters what it takes to be an entrepreneur at an early age and believed the market would be a good place to do that.

“I love seeing small businesses that support us,” she said. “The craft of handmade products holds a special place in my heart.”

Foot traffic was steady for the vendors present, some of whom have brick and mortar shops and others selling exclusively online.

Many of the small businesses present aimed to fill a niche in the community.

Rhonda Willingham, of Flint, owns Sista Girl Greetings and makes art and coloring books based on what she doesn’t see in the card shops right now.

La’Asia Johnson, of Flint, creates self care remedies with her business, The Self Care Shoppe.

Erica Windisch traveled from the Detroit area to sell art and jewelry from her shop, The Age of Asparagus, which is a zero waste art shop.

“I make recycled art from anything I can find,” Windisch said. “I like to turn waste into wonder.

“I’m super into sustainability and preserving resources, so I love the idea of your life and home but biodegrade and not leave any footprints.”
