A Somerset sewing studio has opened after it secured £5,000 from the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loan programme.
Sew What! in Ilminster is the brainchild of owner Sam Evers, who applied for the financial support to launch a sewing studio where people could share her passion for stitching.
The space will offer different classes, from beginners to advanced, as well as drop-in sessions for people looking to rent a machine for their individual projects.

During the classes, people can learn how to upcycle clothing and create new designs. There will also be workshops for young stitchers.
Ms Evers will still work in her local authority job before indulging in her creative side at Sew What! on Fridays and Saturdays. The long-term plan is to devote more time to the project. The money from the loan has been used to buy five sewing machines and an overlocker machine.
She said: “I’m so excited to see it up and running. I think the popularity of the Great British Sewing Bee and the fact that more people are moving away from our throw-away clothing culture means the time was right to do something like this. I’ve already had so many enquiries, both at the studio and online.”
She added: “I would never have been able to get the machines I wanted or get the business up and running without the Start Up Loan in place. It’s been so important to have this money to support us.”
Sew What! opened its doors on August 5.
