Nearly two dozen New Baltimore businesses will be offering discounts and specials in celebration of Small Business Saturday.

The New Baltimore City Council on Oct. 23 adopted a resolution proclaiming Nov. 25 as Small Business Saturday.  The resolution urges residents to support local merchants throughout the year.

“The city of New Baltimore, Michigan, supports our local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy and preserve our neighborhoods,” the resolution reads.

The local Small Business Saturday event is organized by the New Baltimore Business Alliance. Shoppers are invited to join the Downtown Development Authority at the Walter & Mary Burke Park pavilion for a public meeting at 9:30 a.m., followed by the third annual Small Business Crawl.

Small Business Saturday, founded by American Express in 2010, is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, which has cosponsored the effort since 2011.

Advocacy groups and public and private organizations across the country have endorsed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday. There are currently 31.7 million small businesses nationwide, representing 99.7% of firms with paid employees, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.
