Highland County commissioners Terry Britton and Brad Roades issued a proclamation in honor of Small Business Saturday and met with Highland County Chamber of Commerce representatives to discuss their newest campaign Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Commissioner David Daniels was absent, due to a death in the family, according to Britton.

Accepting the Small Business Saturday proclamation were Tracy Evans, Grow! Highland County Facilitator; Amanda Hall of Peoples Bank, Grow! Highland County and the Highland County Chamber of Commerce; Charlene Huffer of Southern Hills Community Bank and Grow! Highland County; Susan Howland, Village of Greenfield Main Street Development Coordinator; Heather Hughes of Twisted Violet Homestead and the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association; Larkyn Parry of the Highland County Chamber of Commerce; Rachelle Trefz of Merle Norman Cosmetics and the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association; and Lauren Walker, City of Hillsboro Economic Development Coordinator.

“We’ve got representatives here from Greenfield, Hillsboro and Leesburg,” Evans told commissioners.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, “Saturday, Nov. 25 is Small Business Saturday – a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities. This year, we know that small businesses need our support now more than ever as they navigate, retool and pivot from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Please join SBA and organizations across the country in supporting your local small businesses by shopping at a small business.

“Founded by American Express in 2010 and officially cosponsored by SBA since 2011, Small Business Saturday has become an important part of small businesses’ busiest shopping season. Historically, reported projected spending among U.S. consumers who shopped at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday reached an estimated $17.9 billion, according to the 2022 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey
commissioned by American Express.”

Evans encouraged the community to shop local on Small Business Saturday and throughout the year. The SBA is also calling on “consumers to support our nation’s nearly 32 million independent businesses this Small Business Saturday and all holiday season long.”

“It’s important to shop local,” Britton said. “That keeps everything running, and we appreciate that.”

“What you spend here stays here,” Roades added.

After meeting with the local small business representatives, Roades read the proclamation recognizing “Nov. 25 as Small Business Saturday and urging all citizens to join in supporting small businesses.”

Later in the meeting, Parry and Highland County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jamie Wheeler also met with commissioners with the latest addition to the Chamber office — Marvin the Moose — to mark the first day of their “Moose on the Loose” social media campaign.

“This is new for this year,” Wheeler told commissioners. “This is our Support Local campaign that’s starting today, running through December 22. We’ve had different Chamber businesses volunteer to host Marvin the Moose at their business for a day.”

On weekdays from Nov. 1-Dec. 22, the stuffed Marvin the Moose will be visiting various local businesses, who will post about his visit on Facebook and/or plan activities specifically for Marvin’s visit. The business whose post receives the most interactions will be awarded a gift certificate from the Chamber.

“Some of the businesses are even going to plan specials or special events,” Wheeler said. “We’ve heard a lot about moose-themed cookies and cupcakes and different discounts.

“This is just kind of our way to showcase all the great things we have here locally in Highland County, all the way from our small businesses up to the community college and the hospitals.”

Commissioners posed for a photo with Wheeler, Parry and Marvin.

“Thank you for what you do,” Britton said. “We appreciate it.”
